I am not going to go against the Russians veto against intervention in Syria,

But my question is what made the Russians veto against it?

The west doesn't have any intention of threatening Russia by expanding in that area.

At this moment thousands of people are dying in Syria , i would rather see a cooperative effort between the Russians ,America and Europe to try to end the violence by the removing of Assad,

but i am sure there are objections against it from Russia's side that i do not understand, anyone please care to explain?

Russia has had a very favourable trading arrangement with Syria for many years .
They sell arms , all sorts of military equipment and work closely also in the areas of Chemical and Biological materials and weapons . Syria is thought to have at least 50 plants /installations in these weapon areas .
The business is worth billions of Dollars .
Russia is also in the process of upgrading the port of Tarsus for its bigger fleet ships and possibly also their nuclear submarines .
They lack ports in this part of the world and currently only have Stavropol in the Crimea/ Black Sea .
Syria is therefore economically important to Russia and highly strategic .
They also realise the long term strategy of the US and NATO , which is to take Lebanon once there has been Syrian regime change and make the objective of dealing with Iran that much more simple .
There is also the question of which tribe rules the Middle East with Saudi Arabia looking for Sunni supremacy but Iran , backed by Russia , wanting Shiite representation , as there currently is in Syria -- albeit in terms of of Government power but not a population majority .
There are also other considerations of huge Oil finds in the Eastern Mediterranean with Syria almost certainly sitting on huge reserves .
Russia will not be letting Syria out of its control very easily , if at all .
Particularly as it is part of US immediate strategy to take it -- even though many Americans here do not yet want to concede that this is more than idle conjecture . It isn't .imo

The U.S. and NATO should flash the opinion of Russia down the toilet.
