    This is very sad.

Reports are now emerging of young Syrian refugee girls in Egypt having their genitals mutilated – a widespread practice among Egyptians – by Syrian parents.
Cases of what is also known as female genital mutilation (FGM) began to surface months ago.

"Syrian refugees started adapting the culture, [and] they started accepting things we are trying to abandon."

Zaid M. Yaish, who also works at the UN fund, said poverty and desire to marry off daughters are among the likely factors that contribute to the abuse.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the "mild" type either.

They cut out EVERYTHING, and sew the girl up leaving a tiny hole.

    Wonderful parents...

They were awfully quick to adapt considering they came from an area where FGM wasn't practiced.

I know the full article in that link made quick mention to some Christian communities in Egypt practicing FGM, but I don't think it's common in Egypt's Coptic Christian community. Those Copts are only in more remote places away from the mainstream Coptic Christians, and the practice is very old and predates the arrival of Christianity, so it doesn't have much to do with religion in these groups.

    http://www.fides.org/en/news/62707-...ss_campaign_against_female_genital_mutilation

When we keep in mind that, by some estimates, 90% of the women in Egypt have been cut, it's not that surprising that there might be a few Coptic Christians carrying on the practice.

"Upper Egypt" is further to the South, on the border of Sudan, pretty remote.

I don't understand the reasoning behind this disgusting practice. I guess they figure the women won't want to stray after marriage? I don't know. Who wants a cold fish for a partner? It's a sick and evil practice. It needs to end, asap.

I doubt that FGM has any religious connection, more likely it's just a mindless ritual which, like Topsy, just grew and grew. And I also doubt that '90% of the women in Egypt' have been cut. Anyway, **** religion in all its forms! It's the curse of mankind, and we're going to discover that the hard way very soon.

Just because it doesn't have a religious connection for some groups doesn't mean there isn't a level of connection to religion in other cases. FGM spread with the spread of Islam. Genital cutting didn't use to exist in Indonesia before the arrival of Islam, for example. (Although the type of circumcisions done in Indonesia are pretty mild compared to what's done in other parts of the world)

I suspect they simply mentioned Christianity as a non-relevant red herring to try to distract readers from the connection between FGM and Islam.

Coptic Christianity has absolutely no connection to FGM. It just so happens some of these tribal groups practiced FGM and then Coptic Christianity reached the area, and then these small remote tribal groups have still been going on continuing to hold onto the practice of FGM for over 2000 years.

As you may know, Christianity reached Egypt 400 years before the arrival of Islam, so it's not surprising that some of these same groups in remote areas that may have only nominally adopted Christianity would also have been the groups most insulated from the pressure to adopt Islam later.

I wouldn't mind betting big bucks that it all started in African villages. It's the kind of mindless stuff Africans dream up then get on and do . . . with the blessing of their local witchdoctor.

It's interesting that it quickly spread to surrounding cultures then.
Why had the muslims been so eager to adopt it?

Oh I don't put all the blame on the muslims. You can also see this same type of phenomena unfold with the spread of male circumcision in the U.S.A. starting in the 1900s.

Actually I recall that male circumcision is a religious ritual; anyway there's nothing I can do about it; if moron parents want to mutilate and cause pain to their kids for no reason, there's FA that I can do about it. But these rituals - rather like team sports - are a herd thing, and simple folk like to copy others for no apparent reason other than not wanting to feel left out.

Could you imagine any other non-muslim group (that's not in Africa) that would suddenly just go decide to perform Type IV genital mutilation on their daughters "just to fit in with the locals"?

Syria is not just some totally backwards country full of inbreds like several other countries in the Middle East may be.
This country would probably almost be like how the country of Greece is today if they had taken a different historical path and not turned muslim.

It didn't start out that way, however it is pretty much all muslims who do it today.

There are regions in West Africa where groups who are non-muslims do it, but other than that you're pretty much right.

Still, I have a feeling a slight majority of groups in West Africa who do it are probably muslim.

We even have a verse in the hadiths, I'm trying to find it, where one of Muhammeds soldiers, screams at a victim, calling him.
"You son of a female circumciser".

I'm trying to find it, may take a while.

I dunno if it's some type 4, but FGM happens outside Muslim groups. Hence it's not a Muslim thing.

Indeed. It didn't start there, and you agree that other groups do it too.

I think you're not following this.

It did not originate as a Muslim thing, but most of the people who do it today are Muslims.

In sub-Saharan parts of Africa, it's probably not connected to religion, or only loosely tied to religion, but going further East towards the Middle East and Asia, it is connected to the muslim religion, or is connected to the mentality that goes along with that religion.
In many places they believe that if they don't control the girls sexuality she will likely become a whore and bring dishonor to the family. The Middle East also places a huge importance on female virginity and this is another way to try to prevent the female from losing her virginity before the marriage, or preventing her from being unfaithful to the husband, because many men in that culture do not want a woman who has had intercourse with another man, or at least she is viewed as tainted and unfit for marriage.

    Disturbing:

It comes down to private parts of a woman, cut out and kept as trophies.

A Danish man appeared in a South African court yesterday for storing 21 pieces of female genitalia in plastic bags in his freezer.

He was charged with sexual assault, intimidation and breaking South Africa’s medical laws, said Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn. He did not enter a plea. Police said the man will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 28 September.

Crowds jeered the man — with some shouting “Satan!” — as police escorted him from the courtroom. The man was identified in court as being 63 although police said earlier that he was 58.

The man’s wife alerted authorities about the gruesome storage of body parts and police are investigating the extent of her involvement, said the investigating officer. Earlier, police said one of the man’s victims reported him to police.

“It comes down to mutilation of private parts of a woman, cut out and kept as trophies,” said Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn.

“He’s been doing it for a long time because one the genitals were marked with a lady’s name, the place Lesotho written on it, as well as the year 2010,” she said.
It is not known if the body parts are from 21 different women. It is also not known how the man committed the assaults or if the victims are dead or alive. Police have asked women assaulted by the man to come forward.

A Danish newspaper is reporting that police are investigating whether the man had been involved in the circumcision or genital mutilation of the victims. Some of whom are believed to be seven or eight years old.

The man was arrested on Thursday in Bloemfontein, in the central Free State province. Police said they also discovered anesthetic and surgical implements in his home, including pliers.

The Danish citizen owns a gun shop in Bloemfontein, reported Volksblad, a local Afrikaans language newspaper.

The Associated Press has not named the man because under South African law he should not be identified until he enters a plea.
