A 9th grade teacher in training gave an assignment to 60 students to design a pro-ISIS propaganda poster for a class on world civics. After 4 parents complained and the school administration was notified, the assignment was withdrawn.

Other than not anticipating that sensitive parents wouldn't tolerate it, I actually think the assignment idea is really good. Asking students to try to understand the enemy, to understand people who think nothing like us, would really enhance their abilities to think critically about the nature of propaganda and world affairs. I'm not even sure if I understand the reasons why the parents were against it...

I also think that this type of teaching in subjects such as politics, history and religion is how it should be done. These topics are all related. Instead of learning facts after the events, children (and adults) should imagine themselves as being in the event and discuss how they will react to their environment and then compare their discussion to what actually happened. I think that children will remember these lessons more than remembering facts told to them. Perhaps in their later lives they can use this experience to ensure that those with influence won't repeat the same mistakes that their ancestors did.

This is the second thread I've seen on this topic but both receive very little constructive critism from others which is a shame

Dang, well the search feature failed me then. I tried to see if somebody had posted it already. Link to thread? Maybe people on here are just more open-minded than those parents and see the value of this kind of education.

It goes to go old-fashioned common sense.Just like a parent shouldn't sit
around the supper table and complain about how that new TV star shouldn't
wear such tight clothes with bobbies hanging out. That only draws attention to
a negative.Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.Indifference is the
best form of eliminating a negative.
Sitting around complaining about Burt the Pervert down the street does nothing
    but encourage more Burt talk.

Perhaps the parents who complained were PC and felt this assignment was not PC.
