Well done sir! An example of that would be the expansion of the Universe at the time of the Big Bang, it was measured to be faster than lightspeed.

 

Lots of things go faster than light. The speed limit applies to physical things (with or without mass). Look at some star, then turn your head and look at another. The location of your observation just traveled far faster than light. So far, alas, it seems impossible to transfer information faster than light by any means.

 

Two galaxies sufficiently far away from each other moving directly away from each other would seemingly be moving faster than light away from each other.

 

Spooky action at a distance (Quantum Entanglement)...one possibility.

I think this is a misunderstanding. What's happening is that the universe itself is expanding. And in fact, it's expanding faster than light can travel. But neither galaxy is actually "moving", that is, physically through space. It's just that new space is happening.

 

And if the space between them is expanding faster than light then the light from one to the other never arrives so you don't get to see it.

 

Extrapolations based on current values for dark energy (hopefully, much more accurate values will come available in the next decade) describe a universe expanding at an accelerating rate. So the most distant galaxies will gradually wink out, then those closer and closer, then the far side of our galaxy, then nearer stars, etc. Kind of depressing.

 

Right, but the de facto result is that two galaxies can be moving away from each other distance wise, and that can be happening at faster than the speed of light when you add their speeds together.

 

Neither your eyes or your vision travel anywhere. The only thing your vision actually is remains in your own head, always. It's the picture your brain paints for you, based on the light your eyes detect.

So that which prompts your sight travels at exactly the speed of light.

The focus of your attention has moved faster than light. Now, whether or not you consider that focus to be a "thing" is a semantic issue. In normal usage, it's considered something we can express and communicate and understand. Nobody considers a point of focus to be a material object of any kind.

Yeah I know, but my original post didn't claim they were. I just said that when two or more galaxies are moving away from each other at the right alignments, the rate of separation can be faster than the speed of light.

 

Which is why I tried very hard to emphasize that what we're talking about here is the location which is the object of your attention. That LOCATION can move arbitrarily fast, since it is not itself a physical object. Physical objects cannot move through space faster than light. Where you are thinking about can move as fast as you wish.

Agreed. Space itself can expand faster than light can move through it.

 

Thinking requires nerve impulses, which are limited by physical processes.

 

Yes, nobody disputes this. What you are thinking ABOUT is something different from the nerve pulses themselves, and can span vast distances instantly.
