These are the people who expect us to believe their version of science and let them run the world.

I wonder how "the moon reflects light" is heard as "God doesn't exist".

I truly hope that these religious nuts are a tiny minority, and won't drag the USA into the dark ages with their anti-science fears.

A few side notes that might scare the religious types:

    1) The moon has no oxygen on it's surface, so metals haven't oxidized. That keeps them shiny, so the moon's surface is a great reflector of light.

    2) Astronauts left a small mirror on the moon that is used today to reflect a laser to and from Earth. This is used to measure how far the moon is. The moon is slowly moving towards the Earth each year.

    That's some scary scientificky stuff!

There's a reason why "Inherit The Wind" (especially the one with Spencer Tracy and Fredric March).....is still relevant, 90 years after Scopes, even 60 years after the film came out.

BTW, more Fun with Fundies? Genesis 1:16 recounts God creating the Sun and Moon on the FOURTH day. Yet Genesis says that God created plants on the THIRD day.

So...how did those plants survive, given with no Sun, the Earth would have frozen to 250 below zero Kelvin?

I'm not sure how the people in Waco came to their conclusions, but as to your post., a God who could create a planet could certainly create a planet that kept warm without a sun for 2 days.

Was still fresh out of the oven. If there was light you would have seen the steam.

Why would a logical God...create plants BEFORE creating the Sun? Or is He just wacky that way?

I don't profess to understand Him.

Here's my question though. Why do you care what others believe? Do those who believe in something you don't believe in not have their first amendment rights?

is today an atheist holiday? There seems to be a lot of anti-religious threads here today. Oh well.

I love Bill Nye, but I think they were reacting less to the facts of science than to the way he blatantly brought up a Biblical line only to undercut it. My guess is that the people in the crowd would have agreed with him since they probably don't think much about it.

I hate to have to take a stand with these guys but I have to ask why did he bring up Genesis if this was a science lecture?

Yeah but technically speaking, when light is "reflected" it's not bouncing like a billiard ball off of the rail. It's being absorbed by the reflector's atoms - their shell electrons jump up to higher energy levels - and then re-emitted as the shell electrons fall back to the ground state and emit photons in accordance with the difference in excited and ground states for each electron. In that sense the moon IS the source of the re-emitted photons that we see!

Perhaps it is because the Creationists are demanding their religious beliefs be included in SCIENCE CLASSES as if those beliefs were actually science.

If a religion wants to run with the dogs in mainstream science, the followers are going to need to stop peeing like puppies and deal with the fact that their beliefs are WRONG!

Its a valid point, especially when attempting to differentiate science and religion.

I respect everyone's right to believe in whatever they wish, however I don't have to respect the beliefs themselves.

    It works both ways.
The religious who rely on dogma to define their universe, do not wish to respect the beliefs of others who think otherwise.

the difference, is merely that one way is based on blind acceptance of ancient dogma and the other is based on evidentiary knowledge garnered thru science.

Sounds like these citizens of Waco have a better understanding of that cold hearted orb than does the Nye guy.

That's not the only reason to boo Bill Nye. He's just another leftist in a prop lab coat.

Not sure why Nye felt the need to wade into abstruse semantic arguments over whether or not the moon is a "light" or a "reflector", unless his goal was to provoke people, which obviously it was.

Hmmmm well in my children's church class we tried to shine the light from a flashlight onto a "moon" to show how the moon reflects light on to the earth (a failed endeavor but we tried). And I'm what you might call a "creationist". Maybe the Science Guy shouldn't have brought up the Bible as if to note an "error" in it. He obviously came across as disrespectful. But the moon serves as a light---no matter how its done. Its no big deal unless the presenter makes it a big deal.

Yes, thats true but the photons necessary to excite the electrons, to a higher energy state came from the sun, not the moon.

This has nothing to do with constitutional amendments or rights. This has everything to do with education, and those people were improperly educated.

I wasn't speaking to the facts in the OP. I was speaking to your continual bashing of those who believe and your relentless quest to shut them up (unless they are Muslims, which you are apparently okay with it, go figure)
