The death panels that were fearmongered by the right wing were a myth but these are very real. So these folks are being sent home to infect family members.

    Good job Texas!

You gotta love how the right-to-lifers and death panel scaremongers were the first to throw the old and weak under the bus when the pandemic became inconvenient for them.

Those who want big government deciding what is best for them should support this.

They totally did. And they were trying to convince folks that it was a moral and patriotic imperative.

It's mandatory medical rationing what always must happen when there are more who are sick than there are the means to treat them. It's just basic reality slapping us in the face.

Don't be too eager to blame the Republican government. It would also be this way if Democrats were in government. Right?

Well the pattern with this novel china virus seems to be that it flares up rapidly and subsides rapidly.

However, the later flare ups have had a lower mortality rate generally-because more is known about its treatment.

Isn't that what was said 2-3 weeks ago? It's not like Texas is out of resources. They can have a mobile hospital there in days if needed. They shut down the temporary hospital in Dallas unused.

Sounds like a cruel call by the county health commissioner. They were flying 2-3 patients a day to hospitals with capacity, and the county health agent decided to stop doing that, when there are hundreds of open ICU beds in southern Texas?

Maybe the relatives of those 2-3 people per day should make the decision if they want their relative to be flown "1000's of miles to die away from home" (an exaggeration by officials) or at home, and not some "death panel" made up of strangers.

The county has had 1559 cases, 647 recoveries, and 20 deaths all year.

The state sent help. The county is malfeasance if they don't use resources available locally and in southern Texas for over-flow.

Sounds political when help is nearby.

Lordy the weak knee liberals....fear mongering always.

I just checked a couple of other articles, plus the state map of hospital and ICU bed availability. There are 500 ICU beds at the southern tip of the state. Starr county has had to send 2-3 patients a day by air flight.

This sounds like a bunch of politicking.

It sounds like its just a county ethics board. Here, they don't set policy but they issue statements on what they feel would be appropriate IF certain parameters were met.

TX and other states were warned this could happen if they didn't take precautions, they only have themselves to blame.

Yes, an ethics committee, put together by the County Health Commissioner, Vasquez.

    Starr County local news article:
    https://www.themonitor.com/2020/07/...ethics-committee-responsible-virus-resources/

“That team will be responsible to talk with patients and family, especially in the cases where we are dealing with elderly patients with multiple comorbidities” and have moderate to severe COVID-19 symptoms, Vazquez said.

“Science tells us that those patients do not do well,” he said. “That most of those patients will never make it out of a ventilator.”

Those decisions will also have to be made about who they transfer out of the hospital.

Vazquez questioned whether it would be sensible to transfer out an 85 or 90-year-old with multiple comorbidities, intubated and with ventilatory support to a distant hospital.

“Rather than taking a decision about hospice services and comfort care and sending that patient home, perhaps to die peacefully with their family members?” Vazquez said.

LOL This thread is about "Texas has death panels" because 2-3 people a day may want to die at home in their tiny rural town rather than be flown to a larger medical center to die.

Okay, we were warned! Y'all sure told us what's what!

    Interesting metrics here

    https://www.tmc.edu/coronavirus-updates/overview-of-tmc-icu-bed-capacity-and-occupancy/
    upload_2020-7-25_9-41-20.png

A lot of “political speak” in this so let me translate

“Potentially by delaying some procedures” = forget about having a heart bypass in Texas in the next couple of weeks to months

“We have the beds” =But the staff are going to be stretched so thin that you can forget about a lot of safety precautions and normal standards of care

We can convert Medical and Surgical beds to ICU beds = well hopefully we might be able to get one or two trained ICU nurses in there to try and guide care for all those ventilated patients

The one parameter that is tightly associated with mortality is number of available nurses
