Sort of like Russia asking Crimea what they would prefer?

That has little to nothing to do with it. Wherever we buy, the cost is going to be high and we still have to pay our servicemen a competitive wage.

That's for Russia and Crimea to sort out. But your support for a second Russian Empire is noted...

Wrong.... The problem has been in the intelligence and diplomatic arena where too many of serving idiots or enemies with in have been running things.

Yes! Interesting studies have been made that prove the majority, taken together, arrives at the correct solution.

Sorry the nondefense portion of the budget is at least three times larger and that just at the fed level.

They might arrive at the popular one but government is not one size fits all.

The mental gymnastics that you must have had to go through to equate my statement as "support for a second Russian Empire" is a bit mind boggling. It's amazing to think what you must have done to turn my statement into the very opposite of it's meaning.

I'll break it down to a kids version for you: You can't trust the imperial power to conduct it's own referendums on sovereignty, unless of course you really trust the Russian held election in Crimea?

I wasn't awarding gold stars; I was just reciting facts. I did not say we are/were perfect or have no blemishes. I only said America is the most tolerant, free, supportive, advanced, economically advanced, and benevolent country in the history of the world.

No we haven't. The country throughout its history, including most of our military leaders, abhor war. The only wars we have fought possibly because of some motivation that was built on known false premises are the Spanish American war and the war in Viet Nam. Nearly all presidents and most military leaders say and firmly believe that the necessity of a strong military stems from trying to avoiding war.

Then how can anyone take you seriously? If you had done your homework on Chris Hedges, you'd know that he's a Presbyterian Minister, which is hardly the stuff of which left wing politics is derived, Once wrote for the Christian Science Monitor, hardly a left wing publication, was fired once by the NYTimes, not very liberal sounding to me, and if you knew something about his career, he's been pretty much a critic of the left and right. in fact, in 2010 he wrote a book, entitled 'death of the liberal class'. Some lefty he is. I'd call him in the pocket to no one. Isn't that where you want a journalist to be?

However, you have to admit, America has done a piss poor job of 'avoiding war'.

Well, if you can refute Chomsky on the crimes of US presidents, I'd like to see you do it.

No, I don't admit that. Some wars, quintessentially WWII, are impossible to avoid; others are very difficult to avoid.

Someone offering their opinion of some bad things some presidents might have done (did the things, but "bad" is subjective), even if true, does not refute my assertion that, while not perfect -- maybe a fair distance from perfect --, America is the most tolerant, free, supportive, advanced, economically advanced, and benevolent country in the history of the world.

It has not avoided war. Many have been elective , ......and based on fiction. leaving a massive trail of death destruction That is probably why they also ended badly........... as they were wrong from the onset. ( although emphatically "justified" as if they were the only option )

The recurring problem has been that the US fails to learn from previous mistakes. It keeps repeating the same behavior expecting different results.

For a nation that claims not to like warring........whey the massive military complex and a history that shows the opposite. These war activities (and other aggressive policies ) have not helped in international relations.......... creating the cycle of angst that demands "self defense."

But then wars and massive military capability is about power and domination.........

OK, but I think that is off topic.

    This subject isn't about safety.

If/when "American empire" declines it won't be because we can't protect ourselves from invasion, or can't kill all humans on Earth, or whatever.

It will come because we become more and more economically isolated, and thus reduced to receding importance and power.

It will come because we no longer believe we have to work to be competitive, and ignore that the emerging economic sectors ALL require serious education and science - at a time when we despise the very idea of people gaining such knowledge as is required for our success as a nation.

Calling for change is one thing, but that’s not what the left is doing. They express hatred of the nation and of those they disagree with. Which ironically is what’s destroying the nation. See the op. Everything dies, and one day the US will to, but it’s been the best country developed so far in human history.
