There were 21 day after the USS Indianapolis was underway in which to call off the mission. But it wasn't scrubbed.

That's war, that's winning. A nuke here, a nuke there, it's nothing to worry about.

Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire, by Richard B. Frank

    Page 303:
    ------------
General Farrell and Captain Parsons had met with General Twining, Admiral Nimitz, and General Spaatz, and by the afternoon of August 9 they urged Washington to review target lists since the "effects at Trinity and Hiroshima . . . [had] far exceeded optimistic expectations." They "expressly recommended" that the next bomb be dropped in the "region of Tokyo" to achieve maximum psychological effect.

They "expressly recommended" that the next bomb be dropped in the "region of Tokyo" to achieve maximum psychological effect.

Spaatz explained on the tenth that "the psychological effect on the government officials still remaining in Tokyo is more important at this time than destruction."

Wrong. Historical records are not opinions.

    Denying reality is futile.

I sourced the quotes to a reputable history book by a reputable historian, with direct links to the text of the book in Google Books.

If Japan had steadfastly refused to surrender, the only way to defeat them would have been an invasion.

I've lived in Japan and made friends with people who would have been the age of children if we had invaded their country to end the war. How well do you know them?

    Hardly.

But feel free to try to describe an alternative way of defeating them if they had steadfastly refused to surrender.

Maybe you can come up with something that no general in human history has been able to come up with.

I sort of doubt it, but it won't do any harm to try.

Plenty of military leaders at the time saw the obvious truth the Japan was already a defeated nation and that her population was starving to death. A naval blockade and continued conventional bombing would have brought the war to a conclusion sooner or later anyway. Had FDR acted upon several overtures toward surrender that were put out by elements of the Japanese government long before the atomic bombings, much bloodshed on both sides might have been avoided. These overtures were received By MacArthur and forwarded in a lengthy description to FDR even before the Yalta conference. Therefore, it is conceivable that the bloody battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa might not have ever taken place. However, the racist blood monger FDR wanted death and he was going to have it no matter what. When he finally went to hell, Truman took up his bloody cause and made damn sure plenty of women children and elderly were annihilated with the most terrible weapon ever created.
