40 seats is a huge swing even if bigger seat swings have occurred in previous years. And the Democrats in the house earned the single biggest popular vote victory in US history.

If you wish to ignore the other differences that took place in 2018 vs 2010 and 1994, you are free to do so. But the trump base turned out in 2018, unlike the Obama base in 2010 and the Clinton base in 1994. In a similar vein, to talk about the Senate losses for the Democrats without acknowledging that they had 26 seats on the chopping block - 10 of which were in states that trump won on 2016 - is disingenuous at best. And finally, you reference the need for Democrats to move away from the left and to stop running against Trump, but you fail to acknowledge that all of the polling data supports the notion that Democrats won roughly 375 seats at all levels of government explicitly because they ran against a supremely unpopular trump and they supported a whole host of very left policies.

But it wasn't enough. To address the Kavanaugh effect the Dems need more, not just anti-Trumpism. WHY did the Republican base turn out for Trump's candidates?

And WHY did they turn out? Why did they lose the seats they had on the chopping block? If their hatred of Trump was enough why didn't they win more? What is the point of winning the local seats without the executive, legislature and judiciary?

Why? Because they're 'deplorables'? Dems have to consider why the folks who put Barrack Obama into the Whitehouse twice turned to Trump?

Gerrymandering and voter suppression are a real bitch.

True on both sides, hence my suggestions for electoral reform you can find on another thread.

It's views are at odds with the vast majority of the rest of the states?

That makes no sense. In fact, that's downright unreasonable.

That I would say it or that it's true? If you look at the election maps you have Dems dominating the west and east coast but an awful lot of red in between.

No, it is not. The saying is that "as goes California so goes the rest of the country."
That does not prove anything except that rural areas tend to be slightly more conservative and urban areas tend to be slightly more liberal. There are a whole host of maps which try to demonstrate the distribution of the population and the degrees of political lean in a more accurate fashion than the map you appear to reference.

Are you seriously living in the UK and thinking that you have a grasp of the views of Californians and of the "vast majority" of the other states?

OK, if California is such a horrible place can I invite you not to watch our movies/ listen to our music/ benefit from our technology/ eat our oranges/ avocados/ walnuts-almonds-pistachios/ dates/ lettuce/ artichokes/ cheese-milk/ strawberries, etc. California feeds the world so maybe you should make a stand and not buy any food/ products that come from California. Huh Brit?

But that is blatantly not true, California went Democrat whilst the country elected Trump. If anything the message of 2016 was as Florida goes, so goes my country.
