The human body is so complex and such a wonderful machine that it beggars belief that there are not more problems than this.

Precisely; why should tax payer dollars be burned up if the mother doesn't want to keep the baby; an abortion is much cheaper (one time cost) as opposed to dumping thousands of infants into the custody of the state per year, thus leaving the responsibility of care for the children in the hands of the state.

Freedom of "Choice" is never the wrong hope.

And "wrong" ( or right) is in the eyes of the one who has to choose.

There is genuine hope and false hope!

Giving anyone false hope falls under the definition of cruel and unusual punishment IMO.

The odds of a child born with severe congenital health problems living a full life are very low so to tell the parents that there are exceptions like Noah gives them FALSE hope. Better to tell them that the odds are less than a 1000 to 1 of it happening at all and then their expectations are not shattered when there is no significant improvement in their child's condition.

There have been some cases of neural regeneration but I suspect in this case there were thre factors operating.

    1) Skull distensibility - the fontanelles of the brain allow the skull to expand
    2) Dehydration of the cells. In other words cells can, in some circumstances shrink a little so the brain volume would appear less
    3) the gyri and sulci were intact which means intact “grey matter”. The actual brain cells themselves were still there what was “missing” were the axons or connections
4). Babies can regenerate some neural tissue but this does NOT occur in microcephaly where there is missing grey matter

Reminds me of an Aussie joke.

“Yep! There are blokes with no guts and no brains here. We don’t put them in special care - we elect them to parliament!”

Please remember for every good story like this there are 9,999 who watched thier child die in agony 9,999 who struggles with repeated hospital visits, resisting of shunts etc etc etc only to face a life time of high intensity care that they could not continue themselves, there were 9,999 who needed less intense care but remained with severe disabilities limiting quality of life

Bearing in mind that there was NOTHING said in the article about his final cognitive abilities

It's FAR more important to discuss the very easy prevention of Spina Bifida.

I'm assuming you're all aware that it is caused primarily by a bad maternal diet? A diet lacking in folate, a key element in fetal development - found in fish, pulses (beans and lentils) and vegetables. IOW, a nutrient poor diet. And no, it has nothing to do with poverty. The very poor in Third World nations actually get more nutrients than many First Worlders.

An example of a diet likely to cause Spina Bifida and other Neural Tube Defects, is one high in processed, frozen, canned, packaged type foods, and low in fresh fruit and vegetables. The majority of a pregnant woman's diet should be primarily fresh fruit and vegetables, with whole grains and a small quantity of good quality proteins (fish and beef being the safest and best).

Good point but since most neural tube defects occur in the first few weeks - often before a woman is aware she is pregnant - then a good balanced diet should be adhered to by every woman of child bearing age

Good luck in ensuring THAT one! You will be about as successful as mandating abstinence

I'm not discussing the solution, I'm pointing out that SBifida is preventable. Just like pregnancy.

So much of the tragedy in this world is preventable.
Which makes it all the more tragic.

    Not completely

Although lack of folate increases the incidence of neural tube defects it does not prevent all of them

There is a strong and well understood link .. that's enough to know not to eat a terrible diet if you're a female of breeding years.

It's not a tragedy in this case, it's a travesty.

What sort of person doesn't care enough to keep their (allegedly wanted) unborn child alive and well by eating properly?

    Again

    Lots of luck with that

Are you going to tell the mothers of afflicted children that it is their fault?

The sort of person who may not have access to prenatal care/education or be able to afford it or healthy food.

They are called humans( that "precious life" Anti-Choicers like to go on about)...and they make mistakes.

Not eating properly is not a crime so no one should be punished for it by having their rights taken away.. ,
