I dont know if this has been discussed here before..but what do members here think of the rapid military expansion of China?

Yes, i know that China is no where near on a par of the US, but as an outside observer, it does seem to me, that it is China's ultimate goal to have a very domineering military in the future.

I couldn't believe years ago when China purchased the Varyag, that people believed it was going to be a casino.....i mean you buy a carrier (partly completed) to build another carrier......if you want a casino, then you build a building to house one.

There are commentators who say, yeah China is no threat and it will take decades to catch up with the US................but i'am not so sure.

Why is it then that the Chinese are working around the clock to get ready the Varyag....why is it that even before this ship has been completed, taht the Chinese have built a replica of the flight deck on top of a building?.......doesnt sound like a gradual progress to me. It sound like a nation that has already got a plan for what its forces are going to be used for.

What do you mean rapid? India's military growth is a greater percent of GDP and much more threatening.

Mere paranoia. China's military spending is relatively tame.

china will be on russias side in the coming arctic war.... now who they're fighting is obvious but the question is since the US and Canada are beefing with each other over several teritories as well as denmark...(hans island near greenland) will north america fight them together? or will it be every country for itself?

True India is also on a big military buildup..........its just that you dont hear the Americans commentating on that issue like they do on China's buildup.
Maybe its the Taiwan issue...........or it could be the type of weapons that China is developing, and their potential targets.

India's targets are much more threatening; major passageways and ports around Arabia. China's target isn't such.

So, what has really sparked this military uprising in the East, is it current political dislike of each other, or an attempt in the future to capture the valuable natural resoures in the continent?

What military uprising? India's spending is likely to counter Pakistan, China, its neighbors to the West. China's spending is merely social infrastructure and basic defense.

Yeah, i was merely stating that the major countries in the EAST, who have had relatively poorly equipped and large obsolete forces, have suddenley found a determination to rapidly bolster their militaries buy investing large amount of money in high tech equipment.

Suddenly? It's been happening since day one. Updating the military is and has been an on-going process for every nation.

True............but you cant argue against that i.e. China's military buildup in the last decade has been on a much larger scale than previous decades.....hence the attention from the West!

It's 'larger' because China has more money to spend on it; the % of GDP is relatively the same. The attention from the west is because they need an enemy far away to keep their people in fear.

China has no place in the Indian Ocean. China should limit itself to a coast guard, and nothing more. In attempting to build a Blue Water Navy, China is in reality building a future artifical reef for the denizens of the deep. The Chinese navy will be homeported at Iron Bottom Sound.

China's ships in the Gulf of Eden did well; they're still afloat.

Do you believe then that the Americans are being paranoid over China?
That the forces and weapon types they have been amassing in recent times, are just merely an upgrade to their armed forces, because they can afford to!........and not the fact that China has a goal of reposessing Taiwan, and being able to thwart any American intervention?

    Of course they are.

How is it not an upgrade? They wouldn't spend it if they couldn't afford it; China isn't quite like the US.

China doesn't have to fight to 'repossess' a territory it already has sunk its economic fangs into. American technology, last time I checked, doesn't have the capability to thwart Chinese naval efforts in that sense; albeit the technology is mostly direct by the Russians.

Are you saying that the U.S. Navy couldn't thwart the Chinese Navy's invasion of Taiwan?

Its only hypothetical, as long as the Taiwanese goverment dont declare independence from China.

The thing is..............if there's no threat to Taiwan, how come the Chinese have over a 1000 missiles along their coast aimed at Taiwan?

And none of them fired at Taiwan, mere fear-mongering.

Yes, they could. The Chinese invasion force would be at the bottom of the sea. An invasion won't happen though, the most simple reason being that China doesn't have enough amphib ships to do it.

No, they couldn't. America's own admirals admit that Chinese-owned Russian anti-vessel missiles and infrastructure make any approach essentially impossible. Taiwan has similar technology. The reason that such doesn't happen is because China already owns Taiwan politically and economically.

Lets put it this way. China and Taiwan seem to be getting on at the moment........but China has regularly announced that they will take action of some sort if the Taiwanese goverment declares independance.
The large number of missiles pointing at Taiwan are not ornaments, and are there to force the idea on the Taiwanese that anything but allegience to the mainland is not acceptable.
China may have some control over Taiwan at present, but if must be a very annoying obstacle militarily to them having this large island not too far off their mainland, which if they occupied would be a very valuable stragetic asset to them in controlling the south east chinese seas.

It's not a worry at all; it's merely a thorn in political talks. Making a non-issue into an issue is hard, but America has succeeded.
