Kavanaugh, like all other phony CONservatives on the courts will be a dependable vote for large corporations and billionaires and against individuals and working people here in America. He will be an enabler of those who use subversive tactics to suppress the vote, he will rule in favor of gross polluters and also rich lobbyists who routinely attempt to buy political power for their special interest groups at the expense of individual Americans.

He will also no doubt be in favor of any law enforcement agency and against personal privacy and security in search and seizure cases, he will no doubt uphold the premise of seizing assets from citizens by governmental agencies without even charging them with a crime. Suggesting that Kavanaugh or any other so called "conservative" Judge or politician is a champion of individual rights is a bad joke.

Even if Kavanaugh were rejected by the Senate because of accusations made against him he would simply be replaced by another hand picked corporate lackey from the unelected group which hand picks all GOP judges these days.

    That is especially ignorant.

Kavanaugh was not elected. He was appointed by a duly elected POTUS and confirmed by a duly elected majority of elected Senators.

At the heart of the matter is the (1) intellectual-aptitude of the voting population and (2) certain unacceptable voting manipulations that I never tire of mentioning because they have become a patent "mechanism" of the voting system in our "Supposed Democracy", which is a sham.

I disagree, but it doesn't matter. In any democracy what matters is the "voting mechanism" (and ours has been warped and undemocratic since the get-go). We are only realizing how awful is the consequence when a sick-man gets to win the presidency.

Obama (a male) won fair&square, but then was manipulated by HofR-control by the Replicants at the 2010 mid-terms. How? By Replicant manipulation of the voting process that gerrymandering permits. What happened then is that an economy that was supposed to be recovering stagnated from 2010 to 2014.

And if you don't care to believe that, then see the Employment-to-population Ratio graphic here. And we still have not got back to the pre-2008 level! (Numbers are always better than sentiments when it comes to understanding Economic Outcomes!)

Innovators very rarely get into politics and when they do what happens is Cambridge Analytica whereby an insanely-rich "innovator" applies a manipulative-mechanism to warp the popular vote. As explained here: Money man

I keep harping on the same principle: Money rots! And excessive fortunes rot the political system excessively.

Our democracy is only slightly better than an European Monarchy that had run various parts of Europe from the 10th to the 19th centuries. The only difference being that previously Monarchs were known and actually admired, where is the Robert Mercer's of today hide in tall-towers in large cities from which they pull their strings.

QUOTE="Golem, post: 1069730999, member: 70622"]The most dangerous factor in any democracy is not billionaires. It's ideologues[/QUOTE].

Read previous response. As a nation, we have allowed our political system to be manipulated by BigMoney - and that has been so since 1786 and the American Constitution.

Nope. Any economist (with his/her head turned on straight) will tell you its Income Disparity and what it does to lives of people that matters:
*Communism got it wrong because it thought the means of production should be owned by the state and thus the economic riches were distributed more-or-less evenly.
*Our "democracy" got it wrong when it allowed the popular-vote to warped/manipulated by Gerrymandering and the Electoral College
*It the US, 14% of the population lives in abject poverty below the Poverty Threshold, where their share of total Income is barely 5%. And 20% live above the Richest Threshold where they garner 20% of all pre-tax income, as shown here:

There is no rhyme or reason for such an insane Distribution of Income, and why Income Disparity is worse in the US than just about anywhere else in the developed world - as the Gini Coefficient shows here.

Read the dictionary definition, and we'll be exchanging on the same plane of discourse.

    Bollocks!

1835 was 1835. Today is today. They are as different as night-and-day economically and politically for any nation on earth. But particularly for developed economies.

There is indeed, and economists know how to measure it. In fact, it looks like this in God's Land of the USA:

A Senate Committee VOTED to present his name to the Senate who VOTED his acceptance onto the Supreme Court.

Get your facts straight ... !

PS: And how can he be removed? Here's how:

    Yes, OK, you're kidding.

But, we Yanks abroad are close to an estimated 9 million; which means we are entitled to a representation in Congress. Right? After all, beyond $100K a year, the US gummint requires us to pay US taxes in addition to the local national taxes we already pay!

Where's the democracy in that? Huh, where ... ?

THE INFLUENCE OF BIG-MONEY UPON VOTING

Mueller is still there with his BigMoney, pulling strings from behind.

Why the hell the American people have not understood that Immense Wealth is a means of tampering with the electoral-system is not only a distinct possibility but, worse yet, A REALITY!

I live in France where the maximum that any citizen can contribute is about $5000 (in Euros). And, it is tax-deductible! Now that makes good sense!

Why not have televised debates (that rotate amongst the channels at prime-time but the government pays the cost), which include all candidates running from which one can obtain a very good idea of their political platforms. Americans think they are living in a Fair Democracy. But the facts are very different:
    (1) Civics education is not sufficiently a requisite course in high-school,
    (2) They mostly do not vote sufficiently since often it is not as easy as need be and
    (3) For some, they could care less. (From here: Voter turnout in the United States fluctuates in national elections. In recent elections, about 60% of the voting eligible population votes during presidential election years, and about 40% votes during midterm elections).

The last presidential election cost $2.4B! Imagine what could be done with that money to put kids through a very-low-cost post-secondary education such that they can find decent-jobs at decent-salaries!

    THE RIGHT TO VOTE

My point is simple: All the above are good-reasons to think once again about the way we vote, and if necessary change the laws that govern the voting process. Thus ridding ourselves of gerrymandering and forcing the Electoral College to report ONLY the popular-vote figures.
(Because the voting process is overseen by national and not state officials!)

Whether or not a "right to vote" should be an "obligation to vote" is a matter for discussion. But, comparatively, in the US it is one BigCircus and the animals are not the least bit interesting! An expenditure of the amount mentioned above for a country that has the lowest voter turnout of any developed nation is not a joke.

It's a telltale lack of "democratic responsibility".

We can do better and spend less ... !

    Are you doubling down?

Are you really prepared to say that Kavenaugh, and all Federal Judges and Cabinet members are elected?

Everyone makes mistakes. It's wise not to make them on purpose.

Where did you learn English? If ever.

I said admission was voted by the Senate. I don't call that an election. It simply means that the Senate, according to the Constitution, must accept by a plurality-vote the candidate for admission to the Supreme Court.

Now, would like that again in Zulu or Afghani ... ?

Instead of whining that I pointed out your error you might want to consider just admitting it.

Just a thought. Feel free to triple down.

It has good and bad points. Like any.

Not sure what you mean. The economy was recovering since 2010. I don't know what the voting process has to do with the Republicans choosing to obstruct recovery. Obviously it would be easier and quicker in a dictatorship, but we have chosen not to do that. And, besides, recovering the economy was not the only goal. Making it idiot proof to stay resilient even under a moron like Trump was also required, and accomplished. At least for the last 2 years.

I see a lot of information that we all know. But no point yet.

We don't need them to get into politics. We need them to innovate.

    Undue generalization.

Sorry, I still don't see what your point is. What is it you're trying to prove with all this?

That's more the fault of politicians than of billionaires.

And the solution you propose is.... what exactly?

Try it yourself. It doesn't work.

I guess I'm just highly suspicious of generalizations of the type that start with undefined terms. I mean, when you refer to "people" referring to Americans, who are you referring to? Black, whites, Hispanics, dreamers, gays, women, Asians ....? You can't get a more diverse set of people than Americans. It just seems to me that every time you describe Americans or the American People, you seem to be describing white Christian males over 60. Which is probably the most homogeneous group in our society. But not representative of all Americans..

Absolutely! We are definitely different from any nation on earth. We're even different amongst ourselves. Being different is the only common attribute you could ascribe to Americans?

    Yeah. Sure. (sorta)
Well... you can vote. There might not be a representative of people from abroad. But if you organize and lobby as a block, I'm sure many politicians wouldn't mind catering to that constituency. Problem is that not many of you vote. Same reason politicians stopped at one point caring about blacks, hispanics and voters under 25. Now it appears they're waking up.... but they were asleep for too long. So gather your American friends and family, head to the nearest Consulate and tell us, with your votes, what you think about the Party of Trump.

Complete nonsense. The left and Democrats simply are not used to, do not expect, and think it completely unreasonable that anyone return fire after they have unloaded their wrath. That's what pissed them off with Kavanaugh. That's a big factor in why they hate Trump.

Another heavy dislike for Kavanaugh is that it makes more difficult their (Democrats) destruction of the separation of powers. For decades now Democrats have relied more and more on the federal courts to carry their water. Much of their domestic agenda has been instituted by the courts because they could not legislate their agenda.

Doing all one can to overturn an election and unseat a constitutionally elected president, as the Democrats are doing with zeal and focus, is what is characteristic of autocracy

What makes them all Republican? Have they stated that they are Republicans?

So Democrats are also responsible for gutting the Civil Rights Act? It sounds as though you just don't like the Supreme Court in general.

Since the decision of Shelby County v Holder, what have been the negative consequences?

The right to bear arms doesn't exist in the Constitution? Surely you can't be serious.

What is the problem with states not being able to handle their own election results?

Sure, but isn't it plausible that people of a certain political persuasion interpret the Constitution in the same way?

Why did they need to be supported by precedent?

"Political payback" in the form of what exactly?

They have followed the Republican agenda above any other consideration.

    Not that I'm aware of.

Many Americans not being allowed to vote.

Quite serious. And don't call me Shirley :D

You would need a Constitutional Amendment.

If they base it on their political persuasion.

It's how our legal system works.

I don't recall what that part of the conversation was about.
