The membership appears to be divided over the 'Dislike' function, and I wonder whether a poll might provide an indicator for the board administration, as to whether this function is considered desirable or not.

That will be a good tool as to properly guage the popularity of this feature, and most likely will serve the board well in the future determination of members interests.

Other forums count the number of likes received as a member's points but this site has its own point system and the like/dislike feature is somewhat redundant except for gauging one's popularity and I am embarrassed by the low number of likes I have received so far.

I find the dislike feature amusing. The only users who have disliked my posts totally lack debating skills. LOL

This is a fair point. It makes the forum experience negative for no reason and people can be discouraged.

Plus as other posters mentioned, immature posters often stalk people around the board to dislike and harass for no good reason and certainly not for what they have posted. I personally graciously donate a dislike to every person who dislikes my posts in a:nana: sort of way.

I do like having the Dislike function available for certain posts that, in my mind, clearly deserve it. I reserve its use for something I find very distasteful in some way, however, not just posts containing ideas that I happen to disagree with.

It is a tool like any other.

I happen to like it. I got a few dislikes the other day, and it tells me a lot about the person who did it.

More importantly, unlike Reputation, everybody gets to see this. There is public accountability.

People's names are now forever attached to disliking the idea that the Colorado shootings weren't about the people on this forum.

How could that possibly be negative for me?

Seems pretty pointless to me. If you dislike a post you can demonstrate that by... wait for it, doing something called 'posting a reply' in the same thread...

It is not worth posting voluminous responses to the same repetitious material 1000 times. A dislike suffices.

Start a thread about gays and you'll hear the stomping of little feet as they all hit the DISLIKE button.

I voted Dislikes are not constructive... but as someone mentioned, they do tell you a lot about the person who gives them out. And it's nearly always in lieu of a reply.

    That's pretty constructive, actually.

Can I change my vote? ;)

I find them amusing as well. It alerts me to the adolescents on the board.

It seems to me that the function of the 'dislike' function is to give one certain forum member (who shall remain nameless for now) a reason to constantly send dislike 'notifications' of what I already know from their responses to my posts. It seems beyond reason to post a disagreement to a post and THEN click 'dislike'....For what purpose? I think the 'dislike' function should be abolished because it supports the mentally unstable here at the Forum.

Conversely, the 'like' button is a handy way to let someone know you like their post without constantly posting agreements to the 'choir.'

Well, I think we pretty much know about them having experienced their derogatory meanderings. The certain (and only) person that sends me 'dislikes' is well known to me to 'dislike' most anything I post regarding certain of your mentioned subjects. Dump the 'Dislike'...Keep the 'Like'

Just as I picture posters I put on IGNORE as going to Siberia... can't help but picture DISLIKErs jumping up and down. Esp when they give you 2-3 in a row. Wanna pat 'em on the head and say, "Calm down, darlin... it'll be OK." ;)

If I've learned anything about the interweb, the best way to deal with something you don't like is to abuse it. Randomly like or dislike every post you see until the likes and dislikes are meaningless. It worked for negative repping back in the late 00s.

I alternatively liked or disliked every post in this thread. I tried to dislike mine, but couldn't. go figure.

I expect they do it because they feel it's trolling, and Disliking troll posts isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I don't like how you'll get "new likes" received when someone dislikes your posts, that's kind of annoying - other than that I think it's a good feature.

I am wondering how it is possible to like and dislike this post simultaneously.

Also what is to dislike in wondering whether a poll might be a useful indicator for the board administration? Like its not as though I stated an opinion with which one might agree or disagree. I cannot imagine a more neutral post! Perhaps those gentlemen who disliked the post might be kind enough to inform us as to with what they disagree? :)

It could be that if one predicted they would be in the minority on the poll they could conceive it as a tool for authoritarian progress against their wishes.

You could be correct in that assumption, but that makes no logical sense at all. That is tantamount to blaming the process of democracy for losing an election. Or for condemning the empirical process of scientific research for a discovery that you do not like.

But thank you for attempting to make sense of a nonsense. :)

You're welcome and it is logical in the simplicity of the no nonsense approach it provides... One can dislike a post simply based on a premonition.

I am a firm supporter of the dislike feature as well as its counterpart the like feature because it was founded upon the idea of individual liberty an american value imo.

LOL, nah... they do it because they don't like what you say... but it's easier to push a button than respond.

Personally, I find it easy to avoid threads created by posters I don't care for. You've seen one of their whinefests, you've seen 'em all. ;)
