According to the below Spiked article, the awful Tony Blair has been holding secret meetings with France's Emmanuel Macron on how best to prevent Brexit.

Apparently, the armour plated Rhino-skinned awful one cares not a jot about what the British people wish for and voted for. As Spiked say, he is conspiring with a foreign power to frustrate the will of the British people.

Besides that it is evident that the British political class will do everything and anything to frustrate Brexit and ensure it doesn't actually happen. This won't just cause the greatest constitutional crisis in almost one hundred years, it completely destroys British democracy - that will henceforward exist in name only.

And 12 years later Blair still believes he has political clout.
He's an ordinary citizen now, but just can't accept it.

So what is going to happen now? Does this mean a hard Brexit is likely?

A no-deal Brexit (which is very hard) is the default outcome from a process which has been running for 2 1/2 years without there being any majority support for any positive course of action (but a majority can be found against pretty much every course of action).

    IMO as a result a no-deal Brexit is a nailed-on certainty.

If no-Brexit was the default then I'd think that was a certainty

The entire article appears to be based on an unsourced “apparently”. It just feels like a speculative hook to hang the writers predetermined opinions on. I’m not saying it’s impossible that Blair is doing what is being described (or that he is doing something even if it isn’t how it is being presented) but I’d expect a little more than a throw-away accusation to base such a serious allegation on.

I understand why you reach that decision, but Spiked is often bang on the nail in regard to British politics.

The problem with Brexit is the promises of advantages made by the advocates were and still are a tawdry combination of wishful thinking based on faulty assumptions and outright lies.

Brexit is going to be a cautionary tale for those who think going it alone is a grand idea.

I do think the EU will reform, but the UK will find not being part of the EU to be a painful experience. Good trade agreements are not easily had.

Theresa May must be the most rejected woman in Europe.... I would agree "someone" is actively working against her.

The problem with Brexit is, as I said earlier, the British political class working to ignore and frustrate the will of 17.4 million British voters in the largest democratic vote Parliament has witnessed. If this continues - and should they succeed - there will be a terrible lash-back from the public who are furious that democracy is being thwarted by MP's.

I would also point out that on both wings of the political class lying, spinning and narrative fabrication - and worse - have been, and remain, standard operating procedure. That's the problem with electing professional liars to office.

Interestingly, a recent poll shows that in a second referendum (there won't be, in fact) more people would vote for Brexit (including Remainers) simply to punish Parliamentarians for their obstructionism and selfish disregard of what Brits voted for.

In the last analysis, I think it now clear that the UK will have Brexit In Name Only, with May and pols claiming success for Brexit. Gawd alone knows what will happen at the general election that is sure to happen later this year. Those MP's who defied their the votes of their Constituents and worked for Remain had better get other jobs sorted out in advance because I don't think they have a future in politics.

Stripped Horse you also need to remember that there are almost as many people who voted to remain. Their voice must be listened to as well. That is why a soft Brexit would be the most fair. Stay economically connected to Europe as well as the extra freedom to engage trade outside the EU which this offers and politically apart. Unfortunately the Hard Right have been working for No Deal, not telling their supporters what this would mean and the devastation it would cause them. Parliament has to take account of that too. Corbyn would go for the sort of deal I suggested and Starmer has been told by the EU they would be open to looking at this but May refuses to allow it to be discussed or put to a vote. It is her deal or no deal and if it continues this way it likely will be the default which is no deal - that is what the hard right want but it is most certainly not what they spoke of in the referendum. The Blairites are fighting for another Referendum but it would appear it would bring much the same vote, with either side winning by a margin.

A soft Brexit pleases nobody and screws the UK. Also, the vote was clear, the winner takes all and Leave won so we should leave. No Deal would not cause devastation, MP's accepting a deal and turning their backs on democracy is what will irreparably damage the UK. I will predict that you will see this in the coming weeks once it becomes clear that the EU will only extend Article 50 if we have another referendum.

It may or may not please anyone. The problem comes from asking us to vote on the Tory fight but it does remain the greatest compromise for bringing the people together. The extremes on each side, tough. Everyone admits that No Deal would cause devastation so you simply are ignorant there. It will cause the worst problems to those in the areas who voted due to austerity - that is the poorest areas where the people have been left to rot. In a democracy you listen to all the people not just the extreme right.

Why would it cause devastation? And who is everyone?

No, that's not how it works. If I run for parliament and I win a majority of votes whether by one vote or by a million, I am in power, not my opposition. Democracy is essentially mob rule whether you like it or not.

Oh for god sake ask yourself how well you would do if you suddenly had no trade. They have only been able to make a handful of deals. Talk to welsh and Scottish farmers and all the other people it would put out of business. Every financial paper I have read and it is not just for a few years as the extremist seem to think it would be good fun to watch people suffer or maybe help them get civil war in England - the papers I have read see this continuing. Scotland is leaving any 'union' like that - the soft Brexit is the only one which probably would keep Scotland in the Union. NI gone as well.

Why it would hurt the people in austerity areas the worst is because they have been receiving grants from the EU.

This has all be spoken about ad nausea. I am not interested in continuing this. I have a lot to do.

All Democracies by default are answerable to all the people. If a Government is not you can be sure they are not working by democratic values. Check out Brazil. Again I am not interested in this continued rehashing.[/QUOTE]
