You see yourself being gay as being forced upon you? I mean you didnt have a choice right?

It's funny, isn't it? You can not actually best me in an argument so you resort to petty gossip.

Ouch. Laughing out loud. Not really as it is kind of sad that what your argument amounts to is a picture of a swastika and no facts.

Well, and I'm glad that you have no problem with it, but you are not me. I am allowed to not wish to share a room with someone of the opposite sex just as you are allowed to enjoy it and/or be fine with it. I have had issues before with men that got distinctly uncomfortable. I'd rather avoid giving that speech by just seeing them in a work context and/or environment.

and so have I, but as an adult I have learned that not ALL men are sleazeballs, and I have learned that having good boundaries can cut any unwanted attention in its tracks.

In my experience, you also have to learn to deal with all kinds of things in the real world - especially in workplace situations ... having codes of conduct and behavioural guidelines is usually enough, but where it isn't - then you've just got to be adult about it.

there are some places that put in place barriers to protect women from being exposed to inappropriate behaviour from men - for example, Iran has sex segregated universities. :)

in relation to the OP ...

I think this guy has tickets on himself ... otherwise ... why would he imagine a gay guy will try to hit on him?

maybe the real issue is that he's a bit of a prima donna. :)

If it was a man and a woman situation you would never say that.

    Hello double standard.

Why would I wish to exert the effort when it is easy enough to just not share a room? And, btw, it doesn't make men sleezeballs. I have very close male friends who, from time to time, I have to explain certain things to. I don't think they're sleezy at all. It's just grossly uncomfortable.

Stating that your living preference is one where they could be no possible confusion or hurt feelings is an adult thing to say, it is preventing potential problems ahead of time as opposed to having to employ conflict resolution later. I would say simply that I prefer to room with a female. That's being adult about it.

That's a lovely logical fallacy you got there. If you don't want to sleep in the same room with someone who might find you attractive then go live in Iran. Great.

It is more possible that a gay man would hit on him than a straight man, I think that is what he was imagining, just as I would imagine that it is more possible that a straight man would hit on me than a gay man would, ergo place individuals in rooms where there is no chance of awkward conflict.

It also protects the gay man, potentially.

I have a close friend who is gay who had a crush on his old roommate and had to move out because his roommate was straight and it was too hard for him to not want to share his feelings. I don't mean "sex", I mean feelings. I've seen the same with opposite sex heterosexual couples.

If the point is to go somewhere for training and not for finding a date, then make it simple. Give people their own rooms or pair them with someone appropriate to their sexuality and/or gender preference.

    It's easy enough to do.

Or maybe he just wanted job training and no conflict?

It is apparent that women getting hit on by other women isn't taken as badly as men being hit on by other men. This is why DADT was largely a male issue. I mean really, Cassandra, would you really want to be forced to share a room with a guy like me, judging by what I post here?

We've already seen one of the worst-case scenarios of what happens when you try to force gays and straights to share the same living quarters against their will.

Is it really worth sacrificing a young student's education and future just to prove a political point? Sorry to say this to you, folks, but if we really could all just get along, we wouldn't have political forums such as this one.

actually ... I may well do depending on the situation.

I think the problem is that some people - especially some hetero guys - can't imagine that not everybody finds them irresistable.

    scared of gays?

means you think they'd be lusting after you -

ask yourself, do you really believe that you are that hot?

I understand your point - but where does it stop?

Some people get crushes on workmates, bosses, lecturers etc.

Do you think they need to be protected from their emotions - or just learn to deal with them as adults?

It stops where you sleep. Pretty simple.

Once again the double standard is on full display. Would you say the same thing to a woman?

Oh hell honey not every guy thinks you're irresistible. Are you scared of men or something?

Spare us the mind numbing hypocrisy.

do these job corps people have to share beds, or just rooms?

If they have to share beds I'll admit it may be a bit tricky. when I shared a room with guys in backpackers hostels, we didn't share a bed, which realistically would most likely have presented a problem. In a semi conscious state if you have been used to snuggling up to someone, you may well do so without thinking. This could be taken the wrong way and cause embarassment.

lols - I might even cuddle you if we shared a bed and I was half asleep - even though you seem to be a very prickly character!

    :)

I have no time for women who whine about guys trying to hit on them all the time either (and here I am not referring to genuine victims of harassment).

And that really opens up a whole other discussion.

Sharing a room with a guy (or guys) who probably traveled a long way that day and who is probably more interested in getting some rest than some pooty-tang is a far cry from sharing a dorm room with a long-term roommate that might develop a sexual attraction toward you over time.

Either way, that hostel room was a choice for you. This dorm room wasn't a choice that was given to this kid by the sound of it.

People don't have to join if they don't like the conditions. I know it is easier to whine than accept the reality that he has no right to join the Job Corps. If he or you have a problem with it that is tough (*)(*)(*)(*). Now you can continue with your drama queen theatrics about gay people.

What's the matter, Watcher? The Boy Scouts for Everybody argument doesn't sound good when it is turned around and sent back your way in another form?

Th same way if you were asked in an interview if you would hit a coworker and you said yes they wouldn't give you a job. They are under no obligation to let him join the Job Corp.

Please tell me you are kidding. Are you really going to claim if a woman protested sleeping in the same room with a man and was denied a job because of it that would not be sexism in its purest form?

Do try and keep up. If you put a woman in the same sleeping quarters as a man and denied her a job because of that you would have a lawsuit. Please tell me you at least understand that.

If he said he didn't want to room with a black person they wouldn't have accepted him either and that wouldn't be because he was white it would be because he is a racist. The same holds true here. They didn't base it off of him being straight they did it because he is a bit of a bigot. I can't believe that needed to be explained.
