I’m confused by this. If your silly policy was put into place, every criminal with something to hide just needs to run away. Interesting get out of jail free, card. Your solution aids criminals.
After watching this video I have to say that the officer acted as he needed to. If the man had taken the tazer then tazed the officer then the man would also have had the officers gun and been able to do what he wished. It is very sad but Mr Lyoya brought this on himself every step of the way. In situations like this I always ask "if I had acted the same way as the person who got shot would I also been shot?" If the answer is yes then so be it.
I was talking about Rayshard Brooks. The police had his car and driver's license so had he gotten away it would not have taken long to get him.
How many officers need to be there to make an arrest if the guy isn't cooperating? How about if it seems he is trying to flee the scene? Normal traffic stops are one of the main ways police catch people who have broken the law. If we followed things your way, it would put a huge dent in that, and make it much more difficult. Catching car thieves would be a lot more difficult. The car might not even belong to that person, could be borrowing it. There would be lots of crimes that would then become very difficult to catch the suspect. Trying to change this would be a huge huge deal and have many implications for how law enforcement is conducted, and how easily law enforcement could catch people.
Is there any American municipality that has as policy what you suggest; if the suspect resists, let him go and get him later?
This must be one who wants to do away with all law enforcement, which is not even close to what defund the police is about. Talk about extremism.
Those who cannot see anything wrong here, will probably never see anything wrong with anything that US-policemen do.
I am used to this kind of solution: One gets a letter from some authority, saying: "Dear Mr. XY, it seems you have broken regulation XY of the highway code. If you pay the sum of XY dollars (or XY Euros) then the case is closed. Alternatively you may apply there: XY. Kind regards XY" In the US it seems the police prefers to execute people suspected of having broken the highway code right away and on the spot.
Here is a link to a real time analysis of the killing w/ several "experts" on both sides. Police shooting death of Patrick Lyoya analyzed by experts (usatoday.com)
This doesn't need an expert "analysis". What happened here was pretty plain and simple. The officer attempted to make an arrest, the suspect was acting weird and totally uncooperative and reached for the officer's stun gun, then the officer had to shoot. If you believe the officer should have made an arrest, then it is really difficult to be able to complain about anything.
They don't even need to run. The DA will let them back on the streets after shooting up a mall or two.
