Reagan defunded and closed down all of the insane asylums decades ago. I do favor a program for helping these people to get into affordable housing whether state, locally or federally funded or a blend of all and getting those who are mentally ill the help they need. There are many people working on this problem now and we need more resources to tackle the problem. Insulting and disparaging these people certainly will not get the job done.

More than $600m in LA Country alone, obviously?

I disagree. My little brother used to be a fat piece of **** until we insulted him into working out.

    Hes in great shape now.

In 1994, I got out of the military and took a job making $12.50/hr. We survived and I'm doing much better now. $12.50/hr was much more than I was making in the military. I know that was 25 years ago, but I supported a family of 3 with less than $15/hr and I was the only income. Granted, the cost of living is much cheaper in Texas than California. I wonder why that is.

Many of these people are mentally ill. I am not convinced that shaming them will help out. Sleeping on the sidewalks indicates hopelessness and many are also shameless.

Crappy weather, knee deep mud and mosquitoes the size of parakeets could have something to do with it.

It’s a problem in all large blue cities. It’s nowhere near where I live. You couldn’t pay me to live in Dallas County, and I grew up there. Dallas and Austin are doing the same stupid policies as in California. It won’t be long until we have poop apps. Thanks California.

CA regulations are in opposition to affordable housing.

YET Democrats want to give illegals everything and let Americans live in squalor. How do you justify that? Democrats have BIG problems. It's disgraceful that they think this situation is OK. These Democrat cities are headed for epidemics... what is wrong with them?

We have a problem here. First, we have people demanding that we make it easier for low income people to get loans- precisely what led to the mortgage crisis. Lenders do not want to lose money, and I assure you when something is repossessed, they always lose money. But due to the social demands to help those poor people who couldn't qualify, the government passed legislation that lowered the qualifications. Literally lowered the bar, insuring the unqualified would qualify. That made the mortgage crisis possible. The question is who should be responsible for the way you spend your money. The idea that nobody should sell you what you can't afford, or refuse to loan you money because they think you lack the character and financial capacity to pay it back has been blocked by banking and lending laws as discrimination. Banks used to do that; a great deal of credit was based on the banker's appraisal of your character- and the law put a stop to that.

So WHO is responsible to pay back the loan that YOU chose to create?
WHO is responsible when YOU fail to meet the financial obligation you made for yourself?

The more you blame someone else for your own choices- then the more power others have over you. That's not a scam. It's your own lack of responsibility- and your own stupidity.

I have never calculated such a ratio, and never even thought of it.

I merely recognize a problem that might be addressed by conscientious leaders.

I think that in a country whose Pentagon cannot account for $23 Trillion in waging a bullshit war brought under fraud, whatever money might be required to address the homeless problem on our streets would be a pittance.

    Spiritgide

I hope this post will address your concerns.

Just recently they (Fox Business News and KFI) interviewed many homeless from out of state and asked why L.A. ?

The number one response was that marijuana was legal in California, the drugs (meth, heroin) were cheaper and free healthcare.

State, county and local regulations and restrictions make it unprofitable for developers to build affordable housing in California.

There's enough housing in California including affordable housing...but not for 40 million people.

And the Democrats in California still have the welcome mat out at the border.

    Keep bringing them on in...
We will not educate your children but we will provide day care from K-12.
We'll provide free health care for your family.
We'll give you an EBT card and welfare.
Subsidized housing ? You are first in linde for subsidized housing.
Get in trouble with the law, our progressive activist judges will be lenient.
You violated America's sovereignty or committed a violent felony, don't worry we will protect you from federal law enforcement.

You will be given free stuff, and special privileges and protections that native born citizens don't have.

Here in California we treat illegal aliens better than our own citizens.

Perhaps they should get a roommate, or two, or three?

What about the homeless who are working and are sleeping in their cars because there is no affordable housing ?

Tonight 20,000 people will be sleeping in their cars in L.A. County and they have a steady income but there's no affordable housing.

During the past 12 months 70% of the new homeless in L.A. County found themselves homeless because of no housing.

Gov. Reagan closed down the empty funny farms in California because bleeding heart liberals and the ACLU went to the courts saying that a 51-50 couldn't be confined in an institution against their will.

This is when you saw the first significant increase of homeless on the streets.

It use to be only winos were homeless and were confined to skidrow.

Today the homeless include the 51-50's, winos, drug addicts, those who can't afford a home, or just hit some bad times.

Meth addicts love living on the streets especially in California because under prop 47 you can stick a needle in your arm in front of a cop and you are not going to be arrested or prosecuted. The cop might even give you a free hypodermic needle.

I'll tell you what the problem is...

    Political correctness.

    Overpopulation.

    Low information voters.

The progressives experiment in California that was a complete failure.

    Illegal aliens.

Progressives who are in complete denial.

There were problems regarding locking people up in institutions without allowing them to have proper competency hearings. The ACLU and other lawyers rightly represented people who were locked up unjustly without recourse by unqualified police officials. Are you in favor of locking people up against their wills? It has always amazed me when supposedly patriotic Americans dentigrate an organization that is dedicated to protecting people’s constitutional rights.

That said, there are many people living on the streets that are obviously mentally ill and are in need of in and outpatient care.
