I don't disagree (in fact I tend to agree), but I'm just a bit curious about your source for this.

 

It's rather flimsy to call enforcing the law a "policy". When previous presidents did not enforce the law, maybe THAT could be called a "policy".

 

WHAT certain way ? The certain way is according to the laws.

There is a Constitutional issue here one might want to consider:

Amendment VIII: " Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

 

It is how the law is being intrepreted and enforced that is the issue.

The number was from a discussion in an interview on the news. If you look up details, you can confirm it.

The below comes from the federation for immigration reform:

"When Congress passed a law in 1980 allowing people to claim political asylum, federal officials predicted the United States would receive a maximum of 5,000 applicants annually. Instead, applications have soared as high as 150,000 a year, with many claims frivolous and fraudulent. Asylum has become a “back door” for circumventing the regular immigration process. Its abuse is unfair to the people trying to immigrate legally to the United States and to those who truly merit asylum."




You can see that at times, the number of applications has been ten times the number of asylums granted. You can also see that while applications have dropped dramatically in 2000, grants of it increased dramatically. More current charts and data are harder to find.

The asylum application backlog was estimated at 324,438 at the end of FY01. 80 percent of the backlog of asylum applications is from just two countries, El Salvador and Guatemala. The top five source countries for applications in the asylum backlog comprise 90 percent of the backlog, as follows:


1. El Salvador 162,000 50%
2. Guatemala 96,000 30%
3. Haiti 17,000 5%
4. Nicaragua 13,000 4%
5. China 4,000 1%

This again is older information. Currently we are having a lot of asylum seekers from places such as Mexico, which wasn't even on the list in 2000. I don't think Mexico has become suddenly more hostile to it's people, but a lot now seek the asylum option to get in. The fact is that the process, until recently, allowed those claiming asylum to be released pending future hearings on the validity of the claim. That gave anybody willing to apply a pass into the country. Most disappeared into the world of illegal immigrants. When the policy changed and the began to hold them instead, the family presence, or child issue was at first a way to avoid detention and continue to get released. With that blocked, we still have people trying it and no doubt the people smuggles in Mexico (coyotes, etc) still promoting it.

Cruz has put forth a bill to allow parents to stay with the children until their case is adjudicated -- it's narrow and just has this one provision in it to solve the immediate difficulty. Could be done this week.

There's a camp in Arizona for temporary holding those illegal aliens for adjudication and another in Texas. They may have to be expanded for a short while. Democrats for all their bluster and propaganda about the children were happy enough with flouting the laws during the Obama administration allowing thousands upon thousands of children both girls and boys to be forced into human sex trafficking.
