The Ministry of Fake News Here it is. It was real and it existed: Information Research Department Here's a quote from the webpage: Surely must be controversial because tax-payers money was being spent on deceiving and manipulating public opinion. And why can't the public simply be told the truth and be allowed to make their own minds up? Instead we are ritually fed "fake news". And are they still doing this today? You bet they are and it's probably not just the one government department that's involved either. This is precisely what George Orwell tried to warn us about in his novel "1984". This is the very "Ministry of Truth" he wrote about.
The IRD apparently routinely made up completely fictitious stories about organizations like the IRA in order to make the target look bad. But the problem is, if the IRA is bad anyway why would you need to make stories up about them anyway? It doesn't seem to make sense. The other problem is that fake stories can end up getting into the official history books. News stories in the press is a standard source for historians. And it's possible we may never know the full extent of the fakery.
