Another American historical retailer is going out of business ,J.C.Penny is now going bust, along with Sears and many others. No more choice no more freedom of what you can buy or what you will pay for it. The sky is the limit for these economic dictator's. You will eventually owe your soul to Bezos and Zuckerberg's ,etc, etc, etc,.
Walmart also deseves to be mentioned by name. With few exceptions, if it isn't sold at Walmart, you can't buy it. Companies will (mostly) not bother to make something that Walmart won't buy.
Yes Wally World was one of my 'ETC' . Although Wal Mart has dropped in sales since Amazon has grown in sales Wally has lost sales. The point is we will no longer have the choices we once had or competition that kept prices lower and selections higher.
Monopoly over what, again? Retail sales? Uh, last I checked I still have plenty of options for clothes shopping and pretty much everything the department store provided. Many of the 'mall-centric' department stores have gone bust because the mall is going bust. If you want to talk monopoly, let's talk telecomm!
No, if you want to talk about a monopoly, it would be google and facebook having a monopoly on free speech, and they are multinational to boot.
No, not even close. Mark hasn't a thing to do with the telecomm giants who ultimately hold all the content providers by the short and curlies. There's other social media platforms, there are not many ISP's to choose from and most people (myself included) have literally zero choice. I can quit facebook, I can't really quit the internet, if I wish to remain employed. (and entertained =))
Not in a nation with checks and balances that prevent these monopolies from eating up all it competitors . Soon in the land of opportunity for all will become the land of opportunity for the few. When that happens you lose your freedom of choice and they own you.
Very true and impersonal. Soon AI will be the new worlds species if they have their way humans except the few will become obsolete. So best prepare as soon as possible to survive it as long as possible.
Bummer. It's no secret that Sears and JC Penney had/have management issues and nothing will kill a business faster than bad management. I hope both companies can turn things around...
I guess you could lump them all under 'tech', that's an umbrella that captures them both. The distinction is between who provides the platform and who provides the content. Like performers and theaters, if the theater is closed, it doesn't much matter what the performance would have been about.
I loved the malls and the freedom of being able to experience first hand and touch and try on , not be stuck in a cubacle tied to the impersonal web. To each his own of course though.
No, illegal immigration and sanctuary cities and states are the real tool to keep AMERICAN lower class broke. If we drove out all the illegal out of the USA at the point of a gun, and used any force available to prevent new ones from coming in, the minimum wage would rise on it's own to $25-30 hour. Though it may be a different topic of the OP, it is the same end result.
When I was young Sears and Penny's also had the best looking clothes. So we would work and save up our money to shop there for the teen dances and skates. I never even saw a credit card back then people didn't like credit except maybe home or auto. And even many saved up for those too. We also had the " choice " of less expensive stores like Sunshines and later Zayre or Five And Dime like WoolWorths, [Spelling may be wrong.] Time changes things of course but not always for the best
If you mean increases it then yes I agree. Small biz can't afford to pay unskilled workers a high wage. Only big biz can afford that. And only big biz benefits from this insane wage increase. No incentive to work harder or advance in skills.
The Law, aka government, changes things. Minimum wage laws have idled much of the working class and eliminated countless businesses.
