The President must get Congressional approval before attacking Syria-big mistake if he does not!

The war powers resolution speaks for itself, the president may conduct a unilateral military strike only when there is an imminent threat to the nation. Syria is by no means an imminent threat to the US, there were no efforts made by the Syrian government to conduct any kind of attack on the US.

and apparently Russia was consulted before this recent US strike in Syria.. so we can consult Russia, but we cannot consult our own congress... makes a lot of sense

What is the point of Congress if the president can do anything he or she wants to? What is to stop a president from attacking any country if he or she does not have to ask congress first?

If Congress refuses to defend its own powers, no one else will, and Congress does not have the backbone to take formal action via a court challenge nor do they have the backbone to declare war until AFTER some polling has been done on the unilateral Presidential action. they really don't want the responsibility that the constitution obliges, whatever a Congressman or two may claim in front of C-span cameras.

Yeah, we're long past gone that stage. Despite our personal political disagreements, we can both agree on that one.

I'm sure you were adamant about the war powers resolution when Obama didn't just wage a tactical response, but waged an all out war against Libya with the purpose of decapitating the country, creating chaos and sending the spoils of the war through Turkey to arm terrorists in Syria. No doubt he consulted Congress. Otherwise what would the purpose of Congress be?

Here I am criticizing Obama's bombings without congressional authorization back in 2013 for what it's worth

You going to keep moving that goalpost? I have a long history of criticizing Obama's power abuses. I wasn't okay with Obama ignoring our national laws, and I am not okay with Trump doing the same exact thing.

Any delay in the launch of a devastating surprise attack by a long drawn out conversation with congress would have alerted Syria to our plans and if it was approved we would be hitting a deserted air base. All this talk about consulting congress is moot now the attack has taken place and all we have to do now is wait and see what comes of it.

No American president since it was passed, Democrat or Republican, has acknowledged the legitimacy or the constitutionality of the War Powers Act.

At most they have treated it as a courtesy to Congress. Nothing more.

A surprise attack? we notified Syria's greatest ally (Russia) before we carried out the attack.

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/u...-notified-before-syria-strike/article/2619618

We can notify Russia, but we cannot notify our own congress...

Are you going to deal with the -accurate- replies about the paper tigerhood of the war powers resolution, or ignore them? There goes half your thread premise right there.

Moreover, Trump the businessman, in 2013, four years ago, not privy to intel, did I mention four years ago? tweeted what you posted in the OP. What bearing does that have on Trump's actions -now-, in 2017, four years later, as POTUS not a businessman, privy to intel on our overarching strategy in Syria and the ME? Not squat doodly, not a ****** thing. There goes the other half.

Are you suggesting we elected someone president who didn't know what they were talking about? He spent three whole years talking about how carrying out a strike on the Syrian government was a gift for ISIS, and then he went and carried out a strike on the Syrian government without a congressional authorization.

The war powers resolution is pretty damn clear, the president may only unilaterally conduct a military strike when there is an imminent threat to the country (which there was not). Furthermore, our own government has made mistakes in the past regarding foreign powers and WMDs, we ought to present the evidence to congress first and then make a calculated decision on the matter. There's no reason why we should not abide by our own national laws on war powers
