American hospitals and pharmaceutical companies are greedy as hell. It's too bad the GOP always stops attempts to regulate this.
I have to pay 20% of my bill. I surely don't use the hospital for trivial things, and don't go to doc often even though I'm terminally ill. The 20% is a lot for someone like me. On the other hand, a woman I am familiar with has both Medicare and Medicaid and pays absolutely nothing for health care. She goes to the hospital emergency room with phantom pain so she can get opiods. She does this often. Sometimes they give her ONE pill, but she still keeps going in. An emergency room visit costs $5000 at her hospital.
I know people like your first example (you) and I know people like your second example (the woman.) The trick will always be to try to find a system which is fair to people like your first example (you) but which won't go broke because of the abuses of people like your second example (the woman.) That's the dilemma with most things though, really. If people didn't abuse everything from food stamps to disability to subsidized medical care, we could probably afford them for people to use fairly and responsibly.
I agree totally. This woman lives rent free, gets free food, free medical, free computer, etc. The list of her freebies is a long one. I've never met anyone with a sense of entitlement like she has. Its infuriating but interesting.

Well it is a curse for some and believe me, you don't want them to have children as the children will be the ones that suffer. Better to let their lineage die out of their own choice.
Medicare has set reimbursement schedules. The hospital doesn't get a penny more. You dont get balance billed. Your anecdote doesn't have anything to do with the expense of medicare
