In recent years a remarkable example of disciplined issue voting was presented by evangelical voters. They gave Trump a pass on his egregious personal behavior because they were focused on his usefulness in getting justices on the SCOTUS who would repeal Roe v Wade. That repeal has now been accomplished; the evangelicals no longer need Trump. Just as they were disciplined in ignoring his behavior when they needed him to get what they wanted, I suspect they may be equally disciplined in jettisoning him now that he has served his purpose.

Excellent point. They were so disciplined in getting what they wanted that they claimed Bill Clinton could not be elected because "character counted", and yet made apologies for philandering scumbag Trump because God sometimes uses "imperfect vessels" to do good in the World.

I'm wondering if Mike pence's going to make a go of it I remember seeing some overtures it made him look like he was going to make a run. I don't think he takes the nomination if he runs against Trump I would vote against a third unknown before pence.

But I wonder how the Evangelical right is going to feel about him. He seems to embody that virtue.

I remember how he was the ultimate evil of the right wing for a minute there, and then he became the darling when he said some stuff against Trump. If by chance he gets the nomination it's going to be in for a rude awakening when they all decide that he's Adolf Hitler incarnate. Because they're going to do that it doesn't matter whoever runs for Republican party whoever is a Republican you're all Adolf Hitler incarnate when it comes to these people they have hijacked the splc and the ADL to call Republicans Adolf Hitler and hate groups and whatnot.

Well it seems to indicate that character doesn't really matter and I don't think it should.

I think you give the voting public more intelligence and interest in the common good than it deserves.

The track record of disciplined evangelical issue voting is there for all to see.

Very insightful perspective. I wonder though if the popularity polls will reflect it. If you're right I would think you would see a corresponding drop in Trump's popularity.

We shall see. Trump reportedly expressed private reservations about the ruling and this may be why.

Not to mention giving a rallying point to the other side.

This is why politicians seldom keep campaign promises. They heed to leave something for the next election.

that is a good point but assumes they don't want the court to so strike down gay marriage or perhaps expanding Title VII to cover LGBT etc

As one such evangelical, I will VERY GLADLY vote FOR Trump in 2024, just as I did in 2020, and as I did in 2016 but more-so then as a vote against Clinton than for Trump.

I agree to some extent. Everyone has character flaws that could be dug up and put on full display.

I figured he'd get a few votes but I think it depends on who he runs against who else is in the primary with him. I wouldn't vote for him I don't really care much for him I never did.

Well the people talking about how much character matters are the people that supported Bill Clinton and Maxine Waters and Barney Frank.

So when they say character matters they're lying.

There may be some who will want to continue along those lines, but I don't think those issues have the galvanizing power of abortion.

There's parts of the character that matter but we do need to realize we're talking about humans.

If you sleep with your 16-year-old office helpers you're pretty evil and you should be hated for that. If you had a divorce at some period or various other things people criticize politicians on if you wouldn't criticize your own for it you shouldn't criticize others.
