Seems awfully heavy for an army standard weapon plus its probably too slow of a weapon.

Watching the video the kickback on that thing is horrendous.

Might make it hard to hit a target in a firefight.

Usually the militaries prefer smaller calibers that can shoot quicker and put out more bullets over an area.

This is more like a rifle for hunting deer, a steady one shot kill type of thing.

i know i had to put a large muzzle break on my to tame it i dont understand why the russians are going that way? unless they want to sniper more but its only good say 600 yards max because the aks are not very accurate do to the gas tube piston is connected to the barrel not a true free~floating barrel setup , us ar 10 has the gas piston in the rear stock

They just upgraded to the AK-12 not that long ago.

Minus an issue with the mag release its a perfectly fine weapon incorporating many popular features from some of the best weapons.

All of its variants are very successful.

Yes it only shoots a 5.45mm but its far more stable and accurate, as well as more reliable, then most standard weapons in use today.

It also only weighs a little over 7 lbs, that might not seem like much but lugging these guns around all day it adds up.

heavy doesnt matter paratroopers dont have to be on foot much and armor [IMG] carriors are the new fad to transport, so the 308ak will work in that situation

I've never been in the military but even the AK-47 weighs under 7 lbs.

The M-4, one of the best weapons ever produced weighed under 8 lbs.

M-16 fully loaded is just over 8.

Now I'm not an expert but with all these weapons we can assume that extensive testing was done and there is probably a reason the weight is kept below 10 lbs.

This new weapon may have situational uses but I don't see it replacing anything currently in the field.

I think that Kalashnikov just wanted to create a new gun and they are looking for a use for it.

I'm sorry but I think the days of our long range rifle fighting are over with.

We haven't relied on that since the Napoleon era.

If you are fighting from that distance the odds are someone is sniping you with a .50 cal from somewhere in a tree, the .308 isn't going to give you an advantage.

Its an excellent round but it still isn't as good as the .30-06 which performs slightly better.

I'm sorry but if I have a Springfield and you have a Winchester I think I have the advantage.

30 06 has a high line of site then a 308 shots to high at short range ,308 in a much better flat shooting round:p[IMG]

Nothing new, the scuttlebutt has been floating around for more than a few years of Russia going back to a real combat rifle chambered for a real man stopper cartridge.

The Marine Corps just a few months ago joined on with the Army for going back to a real combat rifle chambered for the 7.62X51 mm or a new cartridge that can reach out and touch and kill someone beyond 500 yards like the M-1 Garand or M-14.

The United States already has such a rifle, the AR-10.

How does an AR-10 chambered for the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge sound ?

they are actually going to use a NATO round? You would think they would use the 7.62x54

Yes. It's light for the size of the round.

    Got to love Kalashnikov.
    Russians make the best guns.

Wonder if a ceramic plate will stop one of these things.

Weight is a factor for paratroopers.
The more they weigh, the less range the aircraft deploying them has.

    Long range fighting.
In Afghanistan there was an operational demand for longer range weapons.
    Troops were re-equipped with 7.62's.

    Urban vs field.

Not really light, its coming in at over 10 lbs. but yes, for the size of the round the shape seems just wrong.

It looks like they are trying to put firepower and an easily usable military weapon into one gun but its not really working.

To fire the .308 in a military situation....well, its just not possible in most circumstances. And if you are going to fire the .308 its better to use a gun that's more stable.

If you want to use that type of round its better to go with the more established 7.62×51 round which is shorter and weighs less and is also more adaptable to semi-automatic fire than the .308 or .30-06.

This is really a very strange round to have selected for a battlefield weapon in my opinion.

It's an AK, it will work just fine.

My bad, 10 pounds is a respectable weight.

Still lighter than what I am used to for automatic rifles however.

Let's see if you say that after humping it around in the desert for 14 hours straight.

Along with all your other gear.

    I donkey.
I hump a whole lot more than that around all day.
    My chainsaw weighs 22lbs.
Next job I will be bench pressing 10 tons per hour, 10 hours per day. 13 days a fortnight. Gotta love that minimum wage!

My guns often weigh in around 15 pounds due to all the NV crap I attach to them.

As a child I was the automatic rifle man in cadets. 13 lb Bren, help with ammo.
    No deserts, plenty mountains.
    I've done worse.

In terms of carry weight, I suggest it all works out the same.
You get less bullets, but need less.
