Yes, great news. On the other hand, a confirmed case of reinfection in Brazil by the South African strain is concerning, including because the woman had worse symptoms the second time she contract Covid-19 from the new strain.

Yesterday, Brazil has simultaneously applied for EUA for the CoronaVac and the AstraZeneca vaccines. ANVISA, Brazil's FDA, has 10 days to respond. The Brazilians anticipate a favorable ruling and therefore have scheduled their vaccination campaign to start on January 20th, in a victory by the scientists over their idiotic president who is a stupid anti-vaxxer who tried to obstruct the vaccines every step. It was about time, for this populous country so hard hit by the pandemic, to start vaccination when Argentina and Chile have already started theirs.

Uh-oh Brazil and the CoronaVac... the soap opera won't stop. ANVISA, the Brazilian FDA who was infiltrated by president Bolsonaro's loyalists, has said that they have accepted the AstraZeneca application but not the CoronaVac's, claim there is missing data in it.

Based on current delivery of the vaccine, we are looking at 2023 before even 75% of the U.S. eligible population gets their vaccination.

Hopefully the new administration will take it a lot more seriously than the current one.

Delivery of the vaccine is not a Federal issue. It is a state and local issue.

So all that bragging about the warp speed initiative was misplaced?

    Nonsense!

The Pfizer vaccine which was the FIRST one delivered had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the "warp speed" farce.

...and was also supposed to ensure a speedy roll out of the vaccine.
Since you claim that the roll out is very slow would you also acknowledge that warp speed is at least partially responsible for the slow speed of the roll out?

I could care less about Warp Speed. It is up to the states to deliver these vaccines. The Feds do not have that responsibility.

So again, due to the ineptitude of the states and localities, the only bodies of government responsible for delivering the Covid vaccinations, it will be 2023 before even 75% of those eligible will be vaccinated based on current rate of delivery. That is to simply say the states and localities need much better solutions now!

And they did have months to map out plans for this delivery!

So warp speed was just a waste of time and money. Everything Trump promises leads to Fool's Gold. Sums up Trump

I received my first shot of the Moderna vaccine the day before yesterday. I felt tired later in the day, and slept quite a lot that day and night. Woke up yesterday with a mild headache that went away without medication. Soreness at the injection site was not bad, and I can only barely feel it now. I’m scheduled to go back for the second shot in a month.

I posted this in another thread a while back, but here’s the data comparing how individual states are doing. Some have half of available doses administered and some less than 25%. Very interesting which states are the most efficient.

It is correct that "the last mile" is where the problem resides. It's at the local level that these vaccines are not being administered so fast. The problem hasn't been distribution; or at least, not yet.

It is true that the Warp Speed Initiative helped with expediting the R&D for the Moderna vaccine (although not for the Pfizer one; the Pfizer company is filthy rich and experienced, and didn't need it; they didn't want strings attached). The Moderna vaccina would not be currently in the market without Warp Speed. So it is undeniable that Warp Speed did a lot of good.

It is also true that Warp Speed does include a distribution arm. But again, Pfizer passed on this and they are doing their own distribution. Moderna, though, is using the Warp Speed distribution resources that were put at their disposition.

Instead of the blame game among the feds, the states, and the cities/counties, I'd rather see all parts collaborating with each other. The National Guard maybe could help the more disorganized local entities in getting this done.

It hasn't been shown yet that the existing vaccines can get around the E484K mutation which exists in the South African variant. While the British new variant has been reliably shown to be susceptible to the protection afforded by the vaccines, the same is not yet clear for the South African variant. Fifteen of the mutations in the South African variant seem to not hinder the vaccine but the jury is still out on the E484K one. This particular mutation is getting attention because it appears more likely to have some effect on vaccines than other mutations that have emerged. It has been found not only in the South African variant, but in another variant in Brazil.

Here, a comprehensive discussion on these mutations, with some emphasis on the more concerning E484K one.

A drop in efficacy of antibodies greater than ten fold has been found in individuals infected with variants the possess mutations to the E484 site of the virus (such as the E484K mutation). The same hasn't been found in some other individuals, so it appears like response varies from individual to individual.
