What happened to the world diplomats at the UN who were supposed (according to the UN's charter) to facilitate the prevention of wars and invasions?? Well, said UN delegates were all MIA during the lead up to the Russian invasion and the consequent invasion. Not only was the UN not instrumental in preventing the invasion of Ukraine but the UN continues to supply strife between Russia and Ukraine with the UN's suggestions of processing war crimes against Putin. It looks like the problems between Russia and Ukraine will continue to exist since it appears Russia won't be able to take down the government of Ukraine...The problems existing between Ukraine and Russia will continue to exist, thanks, in part, to the UN.
Since the inception of the UN, there have been over 50 small wars, and counting. Some of those small wars include the Korean War, Vietnam War, China invading Vietnam, twice I might add, the Balkan Wars, Iraq invasion of Kuwait, US invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, Soviet Uniion invasion of Afghanistan, and many others. There are still UN troops guarding the divide on the Island of Cypress and other places in conflicts that I have not named. But, the UN has prevented a future World War, which is a sucdess in and of itself.
ridiculous. the un is exactly what it was intended to be, and has generally succeeded beyonf the wildest freams od its founders, the winners of wwii. those winners, including the usa and the ussr gave themselves extraordinary veto power and permanent membership in the security council and neither has been reluctant to use that veto for their own ends. i have noticed something about conservatives .... conservatives hate vaccines because the vaccines are only 90% effective conservatives hate masks because they are bot 100% effective. the abhor gun laws because laws eill not prevent every incident. now, the un, which has been remarkably effective for a totally powerless institution has not been able to contain a powerful superpower with veto power. give the system a chance to work. the russians will be very sorry before this war is over.
I don’t think the original intent of the UN was to investigate racism in America or redistribute wealth via global warming alarmism.
So.......more pro-Putin garbage from Iowa. I don't want to be too harsh on your favorite dictator but since Putin is unhinged what did you expect the UN to do to stop him from invading Ukraine?
The UN is an abject failure As it has been since its formation. The same was true of its predecessor, the League of Nations. It is also anti-American which begs the wonderment that we haven't stopped supporting it long ago.
Well, like everything today, the UN is undoubtedly, rife with corruption. This corruption is really becoming a massive problem even in countries with a robust rule of law. The ****ing lawyers are beating the system of check and balances every day, all day.
The UN couldn't prevent the invasion of Ukraine even though everyone and I mean everyone knew about the disharmony of Russia over Ukraine for months if not years.
The UN the winners of WWII?? What the UN did do after WWII was help to create Israel and to cripple Germany and Japan and help the Soviet Union create its Iron Curtain.
I thought it was pretty clear from my OP my suggestion for the UN to get some diplomacy going before the invasion so there wasn't an invasion. You know, like try to negotiate some sort of settlement before half of Ukraine was bombed??
It didn't prevent the invasion of Vietnam by China, twice I might add or the invasion of India by China or the invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR or the invasion by North Korea into South Korea or North Vietnam into South Vietnam, and the list goes on. But it has prevented another World War wth the 5 great Superpowers.
the purposes certainly did include human rights and protection of the planet. preamble u n charter ........ WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom, article 1 section 3 of the un charter To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion;
the security council has been meeting re ukraine for months. russia has a veto in the security council (nato has 3 vetos), which rather limits the scope of negotiation.
There has been something in the news I get recently about changing the makeup of the Security council. The problem is what to change it to, since it has ultimate veto. I would like to see no veto but it just ain't gonna happen. Not while they have a veto. IYSWIM.
The UN is an abject failure ~ We know. Trump was considering pulling out. He certainly cut funding and put them on notice.
You think that the suggestion from the UN of charging Putin with war crimes is gonna prevent a world war?? The idea that the UN plans on charging Putin with war crimes is like substituting a traffic light with a stop sign in a high speed and busy intersection because it does the very opposite of its goal...Er, the goal of the UN is world peace (and charging Putin with war crimes is gonna do the opposite of promoting world peace) and the goal of traffic laws is to prevent traffic accidents.
He may have considered pulling out but he didn't make many waves. Just what benefit would that have been to the USA, having created yet more stress, disunity, irritation, mistrust and weakness amongst allies? Russia would have clapped long and hard in approval. Maybe that is why Trump suggested it.
