    That was when I was in the Army in Germany, working for the commanding officer as his clerk.
    We got the news of the missing submarine and unless I look up the sinking, i am sure my memory is not going to help here on this topic. But it was huge news. Later on Kennedy got killed. It was at night in Germany.

    I am 78 and was 25 when the ship was lost.

    Not many, if any. However, Japanese officers were obliged to make sure everyone was off the ship. How many stayed and went down with the ship as a matter of honor? Probably very few, keeping in mind the nature of destroyer warfare. Jap destroyers weren't designed to take heavy damage and the number that were sunk with no or very few survivors is astounding. Yeah, it's off topic, but was really a single message to Apache.
