there are places outside of the arctic that get as low as 16°?
    That's like -8° in celsius.

I had a problem with my broccoli. I left the coldframe open and the goats found a weakness in the gate. They bent the fence over and there you go. They didn't eat all the broccoli because they were on the move. They were grazing on the side of the road. All except the babies. They were still in the fence.

    -15°
    Damn.

I honestly thought if something was below -4° it was extreme and uninhabitable.

    Damn.

I'd never complain about London winters again.

It's below 0 F in Chicago on a regular basis. I remember one year, it was double-digit below for over a week. It shot up to 40F, and we were all outside in our shorts & tank tops. This was in the 1980s.

We are seeing -10F to -20F every morning about dawn. We won’t see +10F daytime highs for another week. Topped out at 8F today.

Of course the heifers are calving—there are going to be some calves with no ears. :)

Dude there are places inside the US where people live that get down to like -60°F. When I lived up north, it was not unheard of to have negative temps Fahrenheit. -14°F with 25-30MPH gusts was the worst that I recall personally being in. I would have to scrap the frost off the inside of my windows some days as the heater couldn't keep up.

Ice/freezing rain has brought down several of the main electric lines in my city. I am apparently one of the lucky ones that still have electrons flowing and mine flow from the southern line that got less ice. Was told that most businesses not on generators are closed.

Seems to be a lot of that going around lately. We got .25" of ice/freezing rain last Saturday and the power is still out in our neck of the woods. Even worse, we've got more on the way Thursday.

If it wasn't for our generators and fireplace we would be in deep doo-doo right now...

Yep we have that coming wednesday night into thursday morning so hopefully I remain lucky. We are mainly back up now but some areas are still having spot outages and they shut off whole sectors to effect all the repairs in the area simultaneously. They are basically flooding the zones out in the burbs 1 by 1 with multiple crews trying to get everything in them mopped up at once as there are still a lot of isolated outages scattered around from trees, downed lines and broken poles. My sister got hers back but the end of the road and street behind her were out so they shut down the whole area and did them all this morning and they should all be back up now.

We're praying we get spared, too. This was the worst ice storm I've ever seen.

When I was out splitting wood last Saturday and Sunday I was serenaded the entire time by the sound of pine trees breaking and crashing to the ground. There were stretches of I-85 in both directions that were shut down for miles - it looked like a tornado blew through there.

Pine trees will do that. I have a couple dead ones that could hit an outbuilding if they fall but dead ones usually do not ice up as bad. I have a giant elm with a solid lean to it (fortunately away from house) that could come down if we get a lot. It has been leaning a little more every year for as long as I have lived here. Only reason it is still standing is because the base is bigger than my bar is long. I cut back everything that could hit the house. They were mostly maples and they don't fair well in any kind of weather.

Our hardwoods held up well but the pines took a major beating. I haven't ventured out into our woods since it was safe to do so yesterday but I know I've got at least four large pines that fell into our yard and fields that I'm going to have to cut up. If I didn't have to split more firewood for the upcoming storm I would probably be starting on that chore today.

I can't imagine this has been a bonanza for the timber companies in our area, either. Most of the trees on their lands are pulpwood and they're laying all over the place.

In our area it has been way too wet for a few weeks to do much cutting per a lady at work whose hubby owns a logging company that primarily cuts for a timber company on its lands. Stuff on the ground usually ends up in the chipper and eventually ends up at the power plant. They don't leave much behind other than the stumps.

I have going on about 2 cords stacked in the backyard waiting for someone to come get it and another truck load of I ain't splitting it for you sized wood. I don't want to do any more cutting until it is gone. If my regular guy doesn't show up, I will set it beside the road in the spring and let whoever wants it take it. I don't sell the stuff. I just give it away when I have it to people who heat with it. I am in the bottom so if I burn wood all that smoke just settles right back down on my house at night and plays havoc with my sinuses.

My nerd is finally getting data on his weather machine. It's been installed since Christmas, but we've been in a drought. 1,088 lightening strikes in the last three hours!

The weather where we live, on February 13 & 14:

    ICE STORM.jpg

    ICE.jpg

.25 to .5" of ice - worst I've ever seen in Virginia.

We were knocked off the grid for 9 1/2 days - some people are still without power...
