I was referring more to competent decision-making by any of the available political parties. I'm appalled at what mine have become. And watching Bernie Sanders on tv news last night brought it back to me that yours isn't any better.
Although the US based their laws, customs and most of its heritage on the British model they omitted the ruling class and became multicultural, at least European-wise. The British gained less from multiculturalism than the US but the US had to develop an entirely new culture. Luckily, as in other parts of the New World, they inherited the best Great Britain had to offer. Too bad the British influence didn't extend all the way down to Tierra del Fuego. The business class became the ruling class on this side and celebrity became royalty, which is interesting. Maybe that's something people inherently need.
The best of Britain is actually what they inherited from the Romans... during their Roman colonisation. What they are today was built on those Roman foundations...and spread throughout the British Empire from the 16th century. The colonisation many African countries are working so hard to destroy are rooted in the Roman Empire... the greatest civilisation of our time
Yes, a great deal has been handed down from the Romans, and the Greeks, but the Brits built on that and gave us the Magna Carta, Common Law, the Industrial Revolution, and so on. The question for this generation and the ones which follow is whether they will also build on that or let it all slip away.
Your post reminds me of this exchange from Waiting for Godot: ESTRAGON We've no rights any more? Laugh of Vladimir, stifled as before, less the smile. VLADIMIR You'd make me laugh if it wasn't prohibited. ESTRAGON We've lost our rights? VLADIMIR (distinctly) We got rid of them. (1.236-239)
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard. H.L. Mencken
He was a cynic, all right, but just as the Democrats have swung too far left the electorate will make a correction back toward the middle, just as Republicans would do. It all works out if we're able to maintain an overall sense of decency through it all. A great line, "We got rid of them (rights)". Never heard it before but that's the way it goes, isn't it? We all have to maintain. Thanks.
Nail on head - using the word loosely, we were 'great' in those days; but politically speaking, just look at us now? I can't remember the last time a government of recent times made a success of anything that any banana state you care to mention couldn't have done better. The most recent fiasco being HS2 - god knows what's going to happen with that failed project, now they've been compulsorily purchasing houses along the proposed route for the past year. Celeb-worship is the nouveau culture of our countries; but then every country has its chavs/rednecks demographic?
As you well know the historical European nations were always thinking long term by forming marriages which could form an alliance to make you stronger in order to defeat any enemies enemies. A minor advance in this idea was taken recently when your good prince married an America woman. That's one mighty ally you have already. Dump the EU and UN. Get Australia involved, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, India - all those countries which have been influenced by Britain No Third World non-democracies allowed., Admission to the group is determined by their efforts to promote justice, human rights, education, free expression, democracy - all those benefits other countries have inherited from the Brits and then the Americans. Call it the Anglosphere. https://www.explorersfoundation.org/archive/anglosphere_primer.pdf HS2 Sounds like a dreadful idea.
