Regardless, you missed the point. We hunted mammoths with bows and spears. This is is historical fact.

And you haven't read the post you responded to much. I was talking about the best way to get a more humane kill. Guns are better at that than bows; yes, even compound bows. And, no, I used a recurve bow, not compound. Also, you are arguing that less accuracy and lower impact is more sporting. In the real world, however, less accuracy and lower impact mean a longer, more painful death for the animal.

Then why are you bringing them up? I didn't say a word about bravery or sportsmanship.

Elephants are being hunted by poachers illegally to the point of some populations being almost wiped out, so any elephants killed by "trophy" hunters is only adding to the damage. There is also the fact that elephants are far more intelligent than your average deer or other normal hunting game. They remember their loved ones long after they are lost as shown by how they will stand around manipulate the remains of their former herd months after their deaths when they return to a feeding ground or waterhole. These are regal majestic beasts and there is absolutely ZERO reason to hunt them at all. If and when we get to the point where elephants are becoming overpopulated then and only then should hunting be allowed.

Since they live to sixty or seventy in the wild it's the same as killing a four year old human child which I'd consider baby killing

We're talking about legal controlled hunting.

Does that make killing a 6-week-old dog pup in its mothers womb a late-term abortion?

another thread: So 8 weeks isn't that long? A little interesting fact I learned...

In areas of overpopulation birth control would be preferable though very expensive and I'm not sure how it would be financed.

    Liberals seem to like that.

Eh.............yeah. If you can find someone brave enough to go up to a full grown elephant and make them swallow a pill go for it. :alcoholic: I would suggest the patch but elephants have extremely thick hides so I doubt that would work either.

They used clippers and large suction machines to cut it out of the mother's womb.

It seems like I've read somewhere about elephants being tranquilized and surgically sterilized much like dogs are spayed but like I said that would be very expensive

Then legal hunting is the only practical, affordable solution for overpopulation. Meaning the two hunters in the picture at the start of this discussion have done more good for the preservation of the elephant species population than any number of complaining individuals that are present.

Getting blind drunk and saying stupid things are also legal and sanctioned in accordance with the law. Does that mean that we ought to seek to outlaw drunkenness because it offends us, or find other ways to correct the problem socially?

They are not "simply complying" with the law. They are engaged in an activity that more and more people find abhorrent. Calling them out on it is a perfectly acceptable way to address the behavior and, one hopes, cause others to think about engaging in the activity, legal or not. Legal =/= moral, and illegal =/= immoral.

Hunting may be a necessary evil with elephants but killing a baby elephant crosses a line with me. There is also the issue of loss of habitat which is the only reason elephants are "overpopulated" in the first place. That should be adressed by countries hosting these hunts. They keep pushing more elephants into smaller areas and that's the overriding issue here.

Not a good idea with elephants.
The oldsters maintain social order without blood.

Kill off the old ones, especially the matriarch, and the herd social order becomes mayhem.

BTW not exactly a "baby elephant". Baby elephants do not have tusks.

So what should countries do to maintain wildlife habitat? Sterilize humans, abort them, or hunt them? Or we could put them in fenced preserves and go on Safari to take pictures of them in their loincloths to fund their upkeep.

They could quit expanding farm land into elephant habitat.

I haven't missed any facts or points...there is no evidence that mammoths were hunted very often or that they couldn't sustain hunting it's all conjecture, hunting a single member of a herd by hunter gatherer societies will not cause an extinction event...these animals were adapted to a different climate/habitat, they cannot adapt to relatively quick climate change... as with all animals the large animals are the first to go with habitat loss as adaptation/birth rate is slow...elephants of africa, asian have not not been driven to the edge of extinction by hunting with bows and spears but by habitat loss and modern weapons...

it's a difficult issue, people need to eat, poverty, lack of a social system, weak educational system corruption, uncontrolled population growth/birth control all figure into it...a difficult cycle to break out of and the wildlife pays the price...farmers need to be compensated when they lose crops/income to wildlife but who is going to pay them for their loses?

As long as the ***hole hunters shoot each other and take their recessive genes out of the population.

It was not a baby elephant, otherwise it would not have tusks of that length. Such is an indisputable fact.
