and hunters aren't allowed to shoot protected lions on reserves but that never stopped them from using bait to lure lions off the reserve...people lie and cheat...

Predators do look for the weakest animal. They will try and isolate injured or young animals in a herd. It makes no sense to attack healthy strong animals wasting energy in the process

wolves have a great deal of trouble hunting in deep snow advantage goes to the deer/moose/caribou winter is when they are safest from predators... the advent of snowmobiles has contributed to decline of woodland caribou to historically low numbers because the wolves use the snowmobile tracks(and roads) to move through deep snow...

    old sick and young
and small children don't play in the backyard armed so wolves don't learn to be scared of and avoid small human children because they never been shot at by one

They will obviously take a weak animal if one is obviously present but there's not enough weak ones to go around and mostly it's a matter of separating any elk from the herd. It's a myth that they exclusively eat the weak and sick.

"Yellowstone wolves may kill up to 2,156 elk in the park each year and as many as 11,600 in the Greater Yellowstone region, figures derived from 20 years of wolf study in the park indicate."

completely false...non aggressive unless you threaten them, just like much maligned cape buffalo totally harmless until you become threatening...

You couldn't be more wrong. Winter is prime time for wolves and they purposely separate animals and drive them toward deep snow where they flounder under constant attack.

Excellent article on how wolves hunt if you are interested.

"On the other hand, crusty snow or ice favors the wolves whose wide round paws have evolved to perform like snowshoes and carry them effortlessly over the surface. An experienced wolf is well aware that hoofed animals break through the crust and can become bogged down in deep snow".

"Wolves have learned to use these conditions to their advantage. The late wolf biologist, Dr. Gordon ****r speaks of a particular pack in Alaska that he has observed following a herd of caribou on a narrow packed trail through deep snow. The wolves know that their mere presence, following close behind, will eventually panic the caribou. When the rearmost caribou spooks, leaving the hard trail and attempting to run to the middle of the herd, it founders in the snowdrifts."

mammoths weren't hunted into extinction complete bs, climate change did...if bows and spears were responsible then the african and asian elephants would've gone extinct as well, hunting elephants is extremely high risk with primitive weapons....let me guess you used a compound bow when hunting, yeah that was sporting too wasn't, it takes very little training to accurate with a compound bow...you haven't thought about this much...

naive fantasies about being a brave skilled sportsman don't play into it...

As I said, I think you have an over-romanticized view of animals, maybe people too. Or it could be I'm just a tad cynical, who knows.

Actually scientist are spilt on what caused mammoths to go extinct and many do indeed blame predation by man.

The problem with the above assessment stems from what just "threatening" constitutes, as territorial animals will deem a person a threat merely for being in the area.

I was under the assumption you said deep snow favors the prey. Was I mistaken?

I don't see what's necessarily wrong with hunting endangered animals.

Do they have the room and facilities to take care of all those extra endangered animals if they're not hunted?

I just think you're jumping to a logical fallacy here.

Controlled hunting of some animals isn't necessarily going to reduce their population numbers over the long-term. It's not like they're taking all these extra elephants and using them to populate new areas. At some point, given a limited habitat, the population reaches a maximum limit above which it's difficult to sustain the population (at least in a natural sort of way).

In many cases the revenue collected from (legal) hunting can actually help preserve endangered species.

I assure you I have a realistic view of wild animals. Along with their freedom comes risk. We once had two little fork horns that hung around our house like pets because they were raised by a doe that had become used to our house and routinely visited our salt lick. We enjoyed watching them engage in mock combat sparring with each other for hours on end and we both hoped aloud they survived hunting season. One day while out cutting firewood I found what was left of one of them that had been killed by a mountain lion just a few hundred feet from our house. Kind of made me sad but such is nature.

A 4 year old elephant is practically a baby elephant.
