Trends indicate a slow but steady shift from the mainstream corporate media monopoly (like FOX) to alternative sources. Thats not how this source phrases it, of course, but that is what I see happening. Thats not to say Newsmax or OANN are wonderful either... they certainly are compared to FOX, but that isn't saying much... I like seeing this because its a sign of We The People decentralizing ourselves and growing the diversity of our marketplace of ideas. At least when there's competition, the liars have to work harder to get away with lying Paleologos on the Poll: Move over Fox News, Trump voters are shifting toward Newsmax, OANN (msn.com) On a somewhat related matter- I know theres a few of you leftists out there that understand that MSNBCNNetc are no more interested in bringing folks the truth than FOX is... what are the leftists preferred 'alternative' news sources?
Not really. Think of it this way: back in the day of newspapers they had a pretty fixed reader base without a lot of challenges so they were careful not to lose readership and hurt their advertising revenues. They are to use care and not throw bombs. Today, cable news gets millions of viewers which translates into millions of advertising dollars. CNN and MSNBC and that tribe have to keep outdoing each other to retain viewers. It no longer matters how truthful you are. It is all "man bites dog" coverage. News stations now are in the business of selling advertising. We, and all of our opinions are the product. The more outlandish, the more views, the higher the ad rates.
You seem unaware of the history of journalism. The "man bites dog" quote is from the 1800's. Nothing much changed until the internet and decline of print journalism. The increased fragmentation and niche news allows an avenue for what is purveyed as "news" to be consumed unverified and unchallenged to an audience biased in its favor and willing to believe "their news". Skepticism and critical thinking are out the window and you have an audience of sheep.
All true. And FOX is losing views/advertising revenue to Newsmax and OANN, both of which are far less likely to tow the establishment propaganda narrative. This is good!
The rise of the tiny crackpot so-called news sources has been a disaster. They have no discipline or motivation to be legitimate. The best way to break out is to claim the MSM blah blah blah and then report crazy bs that will get a bunch of people worked up. It allows for disinformation bubbles that isolate people from any other source, esp credible sources. I would bet 90% of the political posts here are based on total BS brought to you by the crackpot media. The actual news is too boring and too complicated for most people.
I think it’s more of FOX being Pimaried , so to speak by stations like OANN and Newsmax. Anyone that is willing to fo further to the fringe seems to become the flavor of the day. I’m sure it’s a calculated strategy by those stations to siphon away viewers from FOX. It will have some success, but FOX will likely still remain the big dog of the right, as they will be still be considered by more republicans as reputable.
I somewhat agree. Though given the choice between corporate establishment propaganda designed for manipulative social control and crackpot disinformation designed purely for clicks, I find the crackpottery far less dangerous in the long run.
'Fringe' is entirely subjective. We're being manipulated by scientific use of the 'Overton Window' paradigm to a point where popular and long-held views are being labelled as 'fringe' simply because they're not keeping up with the engineered shift in perception. There is a bit of 'rebellion psychology' that does actually repel a few folks away from the prescribed narrative far enough that they become more fringe, but this is a minority. The bulk of the shift is really just folks refusing to adopt the new and ever shifting narrative.
I agree that what is fringe to one man is mainstream to another. But I think these stations are gaining popularity by appealing to those that for the most part are further to the right. It can be called more conservative, fringe, or to a large extent more Trumpian. Either way it’s definitely, let’s say a more aggressive brand of the party.
As mainstream news has been increasingly exposed for the propaganda it has always been, expect more competition
As mainstream news has been increasingly exposed for the propaganda it has always been, expect more competition by fringe propaganda.
