It was genuine. I, personally, find the idea of growing old without family quite awful.

We raised children, now 32, 30 and 26 all married and educated it was a good life experience. We have no grandchildren, but I did not get married until I was 29 and truly enjoyed my early adult life.
I have always stressed to all 6 of them the fact how children change your life and the personal and financial dedication children require to do it half-ass well.

Anyway the 32 year old might never have children they she like the personal and financial freedom they have. The 30 year old might, but they are not ready emotionally or financially.

Our best shot is the 26 year old, he and his wife have talked about it since they first got engaged. They bought a home in 2018 and she was talking about next year and he is onboard so it appears..

True, but on the other hand, is the way that childless couples are TAXED to support couples with kids even FAIR...? Approximately 68% - 74% of all property taxes in both Colorado and Texas (Texas for SURE) are blown on local school districts! If you don't have any kids at all, then how is THAT fair? Especially considering (in COLORADO) the sad state of our streets, roads, and bridges.

Texas has the best highways in the country, and it's been that way all my long life....

it is not fair because paying for the child care of others makes it too expensive for them to go forth and be fruitful.

I agree it isn't fair...child free people should get a break, we just don't use as much stuff !.... However, keeping up the quality of education does help everyone in the long run...but we should not pay what people with kids do.

As I said, the idea that I won't be able to have the grandkids by for Christmas sometimes gives me pause, but then I buck up with the knowledge that I won't have to go bail them out either. The people around us can begin to cause us great joy or great pain but in the end we bring those things home all by ourselves

I am of the belief that although I am merely a janitor at a school......
and not an inventor like Tesla or Stanley Meyer I still can set in motion a series of events through public discussion forums that can significantly alter the world economy for the better and have a net highly positive effect on the world for my children and grandchildren and for the population of the entire earth for centuries in the future.

    Yes.... I am that confident!

Anybody might decide that. If they didn't achieve in hs, if they didn't distinguish themselves in college, if they have difficulty holding a job and performing well on the job, if they do not believe they have a good future ahead of them and are not positive thinkers, if they are overwhelmed by the naysayers, if they still live with their parents at age 27, why would they want to have children?

Their children, if they have some, will start fifty miles behind the starting line.

    Another answer choice would be:

Yes, I want to lose evolutionarily.

no need to overcome biological yearnings, we have the ability to cleanse the planet of 6 billion or so, at any given time...

we've decided on no kids when we first met nearly thirty years ago and instead devote the time $ to help our furry four legged kids (feral cats), we've rescued many... a much better solution to wasting time and money on human kids that'll most likely 'turn' on you due to today's sick minded 'reality star' peer pressure...

Saving the planet by not having children... How? The sole reason this planet exists is because our ancestors bred. Additionally, save the planet from what?

If some vegan loon does not have children I guess it is a win for us all. :)

    .
Waitaminit, if humanity had ceased to exist (which it would have had our parents not bred,) the Earth would have exploded? I had no idea we were that important a species to our planet.

Just watch the greatest documentary ever made - IDIOCRACY!!!

In all seriousness though, the irony for those not having children b/c they are selfish, self-absorbed, and committed to pursuing self-gratification is that the looming economic and social collapse that is in their futures will leave them without any resources - material or human.

Families are the most fundamental building block of any society. Destroy the family, and you destroy the society.

It is why the left is constantly peddling legislation that seeks to undermine the family.

As Marx made clear - the family is an impediment to the state controlling the society. So, it logically follows that the family must be destoyed - at least from the perspective of the radical left.

I'm 53 and still don't have any kids and still want some. Everyone else can decide for him/herself. What I see happening, though, is this dysgenic effect of the dumbest, poorest, least capable people having lots of kids while the smartest, richest, and most capable people have 0 or 1 kid at most. This is a problem.

If people have kids and how many kids they have is NONE of anyone's business.

Had the same discussion with a relative 50 years ago. Then it was something else. Silly question.
