Tokyo elected the first female governor, which is a major milestone for Japanese politics. Nationally, only 6% of elected representatives are women and Koike is set to change a male-dominated culture. What's unusual about her is that Koike was not endorsed by her own party mainly because of her gender but she decided to run for governor anyway. Koike ended up securing over 3,000,000 votes, twice more than the LDP-sponsored rival.
