The NHS worked when it was first implemented. Times have changed; older population and health tourism but the NHS hasn't been allowed to change to cope. Unless you have an NHS number, council tax number, a NI number and be registered with a local doctors practice, then A&E need to install a credit card machine for you to use.
What's really happened to the NHS is that government-implemented staff cuts have been made during the last two decades, while we've had in influx of 4 million immigrants over the same period, so the NHS obviously can't cope any longer, and who can be surprised by that?? And drunken violence against the staff every effing weekend isn't helping matters either.
Too many chiefs and too few Indians. You will probably find it'll probably be against some EU directive or their human rights not to treat them. Did you know, the interest the government (tax payer) pays on the national debt is greater than the NHS wage bill. Get rid of the national debt, you could virtually double the NHS staff numbers.
All good stuff, but it's too late. Those who could have stopped the rot have been derided and insulted and otherwise demoralised by the liberal hordes until they lost the will to continue trying. The UK has a death wish, and it's about to be granted I fear.
Every citizen in the UK deserves free healthcare, however I think the healthcare should not be extended to those who come to the UK just to use the 'free' medical services; this is why the NHS is in the pickle it is in. More money is required for the NHS, but money alone will not solve the issue; the main issues are the management and the pull on its services. What frustrates me is that I pay my taxes for myself and fund those who do not pay. I was born in the UK and have paid taxes since I began working after I left school (sometimes two jobs, 7 days a week), however if I need eye care or prescriptions I am forced to pay again for treatment technically I am paying for as part of my NI (in my book, this is not 'free'); the system is broken, and eventually the system will crash to a complete halt and will not be able to recover.
Both political parties are to blame, each one claiming the other under-funds the NHS. My local hospital was built by Blair's government but he used the Tories PFI idea. Just simply means a new hospital that the NHS rent for several million a year, in effect, mortgaged our children's future. Another cost is missed appointments. Each appointment costs £120. If you miss an appointment, you should receive an invoice and you won't be seen again until it's paid. Missed appointments total £1bn a year so why aren't they doing anything about it? So in effect, that's £1bn of funding they've received but wasted. Would a private company let £1bn slide?
Unless you have a friend that works in the NHS, people don't realise how much money is wasted. Funding is not an issue, inefficiencies are.
Bottom line - politicians don't care about the NHS because they'll never use it, and Joe Public doesn't care otherwise 'he' wouldn't abuse it. (there's an inadvertent rhyme in there somewhere!!)
Answer? Because it's easier not to! Bureaucrats are like electricity - they'll always take the path of least resistance.
