I don't believe waterboarding is torture. With that being said, yes, torture is wrong. I don't put much stock in "Senate Intelligence Committees," but look at it like this: How long could you hold out before you caved under threat of torture? Everyone has a breaking point. Torture would work on me I guarantee it. Most at Gitmo were not innocent. And if they were, they should have been more careful about who they associated with.
Sorry, I don't waste my time with folks who demonstrate they will not be intellectually honest in the discussion.
You claimed that "Most at Gitmo were not innocent." I figured you must have some basis of that. I apparently figured wrong.
You are? Well then, if you ever go to North Korea, you wouldn't mind grabbing one of those Kim Jong Un posters off the wall for me, would you?
I actually think that it RUINS most from returning as soldiers. So, it has utility, just like making them cripple. And, you can get them to agree to, and finger anyone.
Torture works very well if you have enough people to torture, the French proved this effectively in Angola. Torturing one person may not get you what you need but if you torture ten or more the odds of getting the information you need is almost guaranteed.
1. Humans have done it throughout our short and bloody history, so you're wrong. 2. Public torture is a great way to both entertain the peasants, and to give a striking example of what happens when your behavior runs counter to cultural values. Once you've seen somebody skinned alive after being broken on the wheel for stealing a potato from his neighbor, you'll think twice about stealing potatoes. 3. irrelevant.
You have a problem answering this question. We all know why. It is because you are comfortable with torture no matter who does it or who is on the receiving end.
Torture is terrible and wrong. Should we use it, yes. I do think oversight is needed, however if you are fighting a ruthless enemy set on destroying you, banning the use of torture is the equivalent of chopping off one of your soldier's arms or legs. It means they are handicapped. There is only win or lose in a war where survival is the outcome, this is not a game, it doesn't matter if the other side cheated to win, there is nothing left for you, you lose you die.
If they are going to use it on a criminal that means the person has already been convicted so there is no point in using it.
1. Humans have done lots of inhumane things. That doesn't make them humane. 2. R u from Saudi Arabia? 3. Very relevant. We have no standing for arguing people shouldn't be tortured when we do it ourselves.
