WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has made it official: The administration won’t be turning President Donald Trump’s tax returns over to the Democratic-controlled House.

Mnuchin told Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., in a Monday letter that the panel’s request “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose” as Supreme Court precedent requires.

In making that determination, Mnuchin said he relied on the advice of the Justice Department. He concluded that the Treasury Department is “not authorized to disclose the requested returns and return information.” He said the Justice Department will provide a more detailed legal justification soon.

I had to laugh when I read this.

    Dem's won't be getting Trump's taxes.

Trump should "leak" several versions of his taxes and see where it leads.

Trump is obviously hellbent on perpetuating his repeated lie to the American people that he would abide by the tradition of presidential candidates coming clean with their tax returns.

All Republican challengers for the GOP nomination in 2020, as well as Democratic candidates, should abide by the customary disclosure, and Trump continually given the opportunity to honor his word.

If the promised returns contain information that he feels he must persist in hiding, that is what he will do.

The majority don't care. Only the masochistic left, because they have nothing left to whine about.
Hey how 'bout that? Gitmo's still open.

The minority who are in a tizzy because Trump's lie is being assailed attempt to impose their agenda upon the majority.

Again, if Trump is desperate to persist in his lie, that is what he will try to do. There is no reason the American public cannot keep demanding that Trump keep his vow to them.

Here's to hoping that dude Maddow is the leakee. Maybe he'll throw a copy of Gates or Bezo's return at the clueless organ grinder's monkey. She wouldn't know the difference until it was too late.

He is not compelled in any way to release them, as releasing tax returns is not a requirement for Presidency...

The law is clear, this seems like just a stall tactic. Every day trump acts more and more like Nixon at the end.

Trump's persisting in his lie to the American people is not illegal. None of his vows to release his tax returns was made under oath.

Whether the IRS code ( 26 U.S. Code § 6103) that requires it to provide the tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee can be deified by Trump in his desperate need to hide them is a matter for litigation

Polls consistently confirm that Americans expect Trump to keep his promise: https://slate.com/news-and-politics...ns-voters-polls-show-americans-want-them.html

Trump should request Congress pass a law mandating all government workers above a certain level publicly release their tax returns just for the troll.

    No it's not.

Congress doesn't get to go fishing in people's tax returns unless they have a valid reason.

    "Orange man bad" is insufficient.

He is not required by the US Constitution to release them.

Linked poll ignored on sight, as polls are meaningless.

If you like to believe that Trump, in his desperate need to hide his tax returns, is above the law, that is what you will claim.
In the meantime, the American people can persist in demanding that Trump stop lying about releasing them.

The code you quoted is very valid. However, if I bothered to search, I would bet I could find a code that states a Congressman will not use his position to search for dirt on a political rival....or something similar.

I have no problem with some members of Congress obtaining the tax returns of individuals. It was done when Lerner was being investigated for improprieties of the IRS. However, the attempt to obtain Trump's tax returns is quite obvious nothing more than a political ploy and is not related to "official business"

You can bet on the existence of a code that comports with the Trump agenda and allows him to persist in his lie.

There is ample evidence that Trump may have engaged in financial irregularities that were illegal, as Romney and others strongly suspect.

Of course, New York helping Trump keep his promise to the American people might well expose his crimes, if any, and render compliance with the IRS code moot.
