Here's what's happening there are sanctuary cities in liberal strong holds (places that reliably vote Democrat) illegals flood in then are counted on the census which gives those Democrat states more power in our us elections.

While I really do not see what the drama is over adding the question, I do agree that there are other methods that could be used to determine if a person filling out the census is a legal citizen. However, it would take much more man-hours and effort to accomplish. One the plus side, it would likely be more accurate and might even identify other issues....like multiple people using the same SSN.

The drama is that it would have resulted in a massive undercount in the census. If, as the CB says, another method would be more accurate and wouldn't compromise the census, that's a no-brainer. We should have gone that direction from the beginning.

 

Counted in appropriation =/= voting. By your "logic," newborns vote.

It's not that hard.
We now have the American Community Survey taken yearly by the census bureau. It asks the citizenship question.
From that number you can subtract green card holders etc. to get the illegal number.

 

I would think it would only cause an undercut of those in the country illegally. People in the country legal (on Visa) would have no reason to not answer. I can understand the arguments on both sides as to whether people in the country illegal should be used to determine the number of Representatives and Electoral votes for a State. I haven't decided which argument has more merit yet.

There is certainly a much higher cost investment in this current direction.

 

The ACS is the census....and it is conducted every 10 years. The citizenship question was removed from the long form in 2010 when the long form became the "standard form".

 

How would it undercut those numbers compared to the census solution? People here illegally would have plenty of reasons not to answer, and yes, it would likely dissuade many legal immigrants from answering as well. As far as whether or not illegal immigrants should count for appropriation, I'm personally fine with cutting them. It would require some legal changes, but I'm not against them.

If they don't trust the Trump administration's motives (seeing as they've tried to remove legal immigrants as well, even green card holders) or if they have an illegal immigrant in their household. Even the CB is worried about this. The guy who originally pushed for the question admitted that this is exactly what he was HOPING would happen.

I'll go ahead and remind you that all legal immigrants are in a database, and are required to update their addresses with USCIS.

What you are talking about is a "prediction report" made every year....not a census. A small sampling of some households are done every year (not to exceed 1 in 5 years per household) to insure validation of the ACS predictions.....but there is not a broad sampling done every year. Also, those 1 year samples normally target specific areas (normally small rural areas) where the ACS feels they need better data.
