I agree with you that to risk the relationship over dairy is nuts. I'd simply bann the sales of all dairy products across the border in either direction and the case is solved.
As far as lumber goes I think because of the Canadian stumpage problem Iban the sale of Canadian lumber products in the US and when Trump talks to Putin at this upcoming summit I'd look into importing Russian timber to make up any shortfall until Canada replaces its present stumpage regime with a free market mechanism similar to what the US uses. I doubt if it would take long for Canada to come to its senses.

Well 10 times maybe, but I don't see how it applies to your argument when Canada has fewer people and buys more US milk>???

    Shame be upon you.
According to the International Trade Centre, a dual project of the United Nations and World Trade Organization:

    • Canada applies an average tariff rate of 13.12% on imported shoes.
    • The US applies an average tariff rate of 11.86%.
    • So, the average tariff rate on foreign shoes going into Canada is just slightly higher than shoes going into the US.
    • No tariffs are applied on footwear moving between the two countries if they are made in either country, due to the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
    • Additionally, members of the European Union and other Canadian allies also enjoy tariff-free shoe imports.

I don't know anything about cheese making, but apparently we export "diafiltered" milk to Canada to make cheese.

And, there is NO tariff on US shoes.

I doubt Trump knew that when he went off on his shoe tariff bombast.

That's the problem with Trump. He doesn't know much of anything, but it doesn't keep his mouth shut.

The international trade centre disagrees with you.

Except that is not what you stated as clearly you have no idea what rate of tariffs apply on imported shoes across the US/Canada border

No one said they didn't! You clearly thought that tariffs are put on shoes crossing the Canada/US border and now you're trying once again to slither away from it. So back to the question that you kept running away from - post 31 - "So you must be against increasing tariffs on imports as Trump has pointed out how bad high tariffs are for Canada?"

No it doesn't. What the trade center has to say has been posted previously on this thread. You are misreading. Canada puts tariffs on shoes- but not from NAFTA nations US/Mexico.

You did not understand what you read as it refutes what you said.

What a stupid statement, I will have to do some digging if Trump REALLY believes this or if was simply one of his sales/lies comments.

Canadians spending their money in the US is obviously a good thing, how dare we have people spend money and add tax revenue to our system! lawl at Trump

He's proven that over and over again. His tariffs have hurt South Carolina ports and really hurt the supply chain for South Carolina manufacturing.

I'm not sure where your confusion is on this. The posts are from the international trade center.
    Maybe this is it.
Both countries charge tariffs on imported shoes. Lets say from Italy - they make nice shoes.
Neither country charges tariffs on shoes made in each others country.
The tariffs on imported shoes are only 1% apart on imported shoes, so why would you buy them in the US instead of Canada like Trump is selling?
Oh, actually there is probably no longer a tariff on Italian shoes in Canada because they did join CETA while the US rejected TTIP. So if anything it's probably Americans buying shoe in Canada and walking back in them.

That begs the question, if a Canadian buys a shoe in the US that is from a country in which Canada imposes shoe tariffs, does the buyer pay the tariff, plus the sales tax, plus the US tariff (if any) on that shoe?

Only a guess, but I would say yes since it wasn't made in the US.
    Edit:
Assuming it was above the exemption.

    The importer pays the tariff.
If a Canadian resident (citizen or landed immigrant) is importing for his private use and less than his exempt amount, they pay nothing. If more they pay the federal sales tax and any duty. IN the case of shoes from the US, there is zero tariff on american shoes so there is no duty. A Canadian commercial importer of say, malaysian shoes pays the tariff as it applies to the exporting nation as part of his landed costs. Its marked up from there as it moves thru the distribution chain. The consumer user pays for it marked up two or three times by the time the item gets to his shopping cart.

Trump's limited and bizarre transactional perspective on trade is diabolically masochistic.

Let he who is without and all that. He can't possibly be that ignorant of reality, can he?

I can appreciate that, but Trump was smart enough to figure out how to lose the popular vote but still win the election.
