People would be called for jury service - like we do now - just that they would have the option of opting out. People can easily opt out of Jury service by intentionally failing the criteria - but they don't so yes - many people want to fulfill their civic duty.

Does compulsory jury duty go against anything in the constitution?

Does compulsory jury duty go against anything in the constitution? I'm also interested in what you think about laws against threatening behaviour including the free speech implications for verbal threats.

Threats of violence against someone is illegal. Rights end where the nose of another begins. Freedom of speech does not include the freedom to threaten someone with violence.

How do you reason this with Jefferson's quote?

Threatening someone .. while the threat itself does not injure a person .. threatens injury.

When the mob comes to your place of business and demands protection money, they have not actually hurt you - Yet.

The legitimate purview of Gov't is protection from physical harm. (you can add threats of harm to the list).

Right, so Jefferson's quote is slightly limiting then?

General principles are just that - they do not cover all instances. Just like every possibility is not written into the constitution. You have what is written in the Constitution and the general principle by which law and the constitution are supposed to be interpreted.

After that .... we are on our own.
