Trump made a number of assumptions regarding his border wall. Obviously, his speech was designed strictly for his base -- meaning they are the only ones who would believe it. He made no attempt to reach out to the majority of Americans who feel he is solely responsible for the government shutdown. More importantly, he made no attempt to reach out to Democrats to reopen the government.

Trump feels the Democrats should come to the table and negotiate a compromise. He and McConnell are making a fundamental assumption. They are assuming both sides agree that Trump's wall is beneficial, and, therefore, the only issue is negotiating a compromise, a price.

That assumption is blatantly false. It has been from the very beginning, and Trump is incapable of understanding that. The Democrats, many Republicans in Congress, and the majority of the American people feel a border wall is essentially a bad idea. There are modern methods that are far more effective at making our border secure at less cost.

Trump made the assumption this his idea of negotiating is to work out a deal with his son-in-law and White House adviser Jared Kushner, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Vice President Mike Pence. They created this "broader compromise proposal." Democrats were not welcome.

Trump described a "humanitarian crisis" that largely takes place south of our border. He assumes his wall will cure this humanitarian crisis.

Trump attempted to scare us with a litany of crimes committed by illegal immigrants already in this country. He assumes his wall will eliminate many these crimes.

Trump lectured us on illegal drugs entering this country via the southern border. He assumes his wall will stop the flow of drugs. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics, 90 percent of heroin seized along the border, 88 percent of cocaine, 87 percent of methamphetamine, and 80 percent of fentanyl in the first 11 months of the 2018 fiscal year were caught trying to be smuggled in at legal crossing points.

Trump told us that, by way of compromise, that he has given up on a brick wall from "sea to shining sea," and he is asking for only $5.7 billion for only 230 miles of a steel slat barrier this year! He assumes that those fleeing across the border won't go around, under, or over his beautiful steel slat barrier.

He further assumes that his tactics will work next year when he wants something.

Trump offered three years of protection for immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children, meaning the Dreamers. Earlier in his administration, Trump destroyed the protections afforded to Dreamers. Now he proposing to correct the fault for which he is responsible, using that as a bargaining tool. He is assuming the Democrats will agree to a temporary solution for the Dreamers so that a permanent wall can be built.

He further assumes the Democrats are stupid.

His speech today was just another photo op. It is noted that he did not allow questions from the White House press corps.

Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, denounced the offer as “not a compromise but more hostage taking.”

Schumer has a point. The N.Y. Times reports, "Over the course of his administration, Mr. Trump has repeatedly sought to curb both legal and illegal immigration. He has revoked Temporary Protected Status, or T.P.S., which offers crucial protections for immigrants, for people from some Latin American and African countries. And he has moved to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, an Obama-era program that shielded the young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers from deportation."

Now Trump wants to deal, using these people as chess pieces. In the deal he outlined on Saturday, Mr. Trump offered to restore T.P.S. protection for 300,000 people, and said he would allow 700,000 Dreamers to keep their protections for three more years in exchange for $5.7 billion for a border barrier.

“That is our plan,” Trump said.

Boy, Trump is a piece of work.

It is pleasing to me that even Trump's fans feel my analysis is correct. They are making no attempt to defend Trump's so-called "compromise." Even his fans know his speech yesterday was just a photo op and filled with B.S.

The first clue is, Trump refused to take questions from the White House press corps regarding feckless "compromise."

Commenting on one's own thread three consecutive times just to move it up the ladder should be a violation of the rules. It could be called the "hostage taking" rule.

Suddenly after 30 years of broken promises to fix the illegal alien problem liberals have woken up and are now full of big ideas

Sorry, but you are too little, too late

Its time to build the wall

We all make assumptions. I made the assumption, once I may add, that the majority of TDS sufferers would eventually grow up. Boy was I wrong.

Trump may still fail, but it should worry us that a president — any president — can do what Trump has done.

Let’s be clear: There is no crisis. The number of undocumented immigrants in the United States has been declining for a decade. The number of people caught trying to sneak across the southern border has been on a downward trend for almost 20 years and is lower than it was in 1973.

As has often been pointed out, far more people are coming to the U.S. legally and then overstaying their visas than are crossing the southern border illegally. But it’s important to put these numbers in context. More than 52 million foreigners entered the U.S. legally in fiscal year 2017. Of this cohort, 98.7 percent left on time and in accordance with their visas. A large portion of those remaining left after a brief overstay, and the best government estimate is that maybe 0.8 percent of those who entered the country in 2017 had stayed on by mid-2018."

Trump whined about the crimes committed by illegal immigrants, attempting to scare the American people into submission. Those crimes were committed by the eleven million illegal immigrants already in this country. Through association Trump wants his gullible base to believe this wall will diminish those crimes. Of course, that is ludicrous.

No one is demanding liberals agree with the wall just as I do not have to agree with the wipe-every-nose welfare system

Three of Trump's fans proved me right.

One takes exception to my providing additional information to go along with what I already said.

Three more examples of fans supporting Trump, but they have no idea why and they can't defend what Trump says or does. Of course, this says a great deal about their intellectual capabilities.

That's the biggest lie ever. "Walls don't work". It's even hard to say with a straight face. You got some skills if you can. Even Disney land has walls and that's the happiest place on earth.

Trump has placed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in a tough position. He has stated that reopening the government is up to Trump and the Democrats, which is a very curious position for the Senate Majority Leader to take. McConnell is caught between a rock and a hard spot because Trump reneged on a deal to sign a CR passed by the Senate in December.

McConnell and Congressional Republicans fear Trump's base. Quite frankly, I don't see why. In a referendum on Trump, the midterms, illegal immigration and his wall dominated Trump's speeches leading up to the election. The Republican Party lost the House, losing 40 seats, along with several state houses and state legislatures. The voters did not like Trump's message.

Regarding Trump's border wall, polls show white evangelicals' support for Trump plunged a net 13 percentage points in the NPR poll, sinking to 66-23 percent approval from 73-17 percent in the December poll. Trump also lost support from noncollege-educated white men, with his approval falling to 50 percent from 56 percent.

Cracks even appeared in Trump's seemingly impenetrable facade of overall Republican support: 83 percent of Republican respondents said they support the president in the most recent poll — down 7 points from the early December poll — while his disapproval in the party rose 3 points.

That is Trump's base, but McConnell and Congressional Republicans don't get it. Trump's border wall is a loser among voters.

The Democrats are looking at 2020, nothing more, nothing less. If the wall gets funded, they loose a lot of ground, maybe the election.

This all has nothing to do with walls or how well they work.

They must have really hated Obama's message. He lost 63 seats in 2010. The average loss in the first midterm is 37 seats. 40 seats is not that far from normal. But 63 is catastrophic.

You have not been listening. Trump is. He is demanding $5.7B for his wall to which liberals would have to agree. It is why we have a shutdown. Duh!

Do you have the slightest idea what we are talking about?

Why? Trump offered to give Democrats a three-year extension of work permits for 700,000 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients and 300,000 Temporary Protected Status immigrants in exchange for $5.7 billion for 230 miles of physical barriers on the Southern border.

The border is 2,000 miles long. Please explain to me how 230 miles of barrier will stop illegal immigration. Trump whined about the crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Those crimes were committed by illegal immigrants already in this country, 11 1/2 million of them. Please explain how his wall will deal with those crimes he whined about.

Maybe, just maybe, 21st Century technology along with more border guards, more aircraft, and more boats will work more effectively all along the whole 2,000 miles of border at less cost. The government can work that out once the government opens up.

That's what the opposition wants to do. But you think that is a bad idea. Why?

Please deal with my questions. Anyone?

Trump made these people hostages. Now he wants to use them as bargaining chips to make a deal with the Democrats. This is his idea of a "compromise."

He honesty thinks this how our government should work.

Trump negotiates like a mafia don.

You support Trump, but you have no idea why. You have my sympathies. I mean it. I would hate to be in your shoes.

Walls work. Simple. The dems refuse to negotiate, basically refuse to do their job. Y’all must think the Border Patrol and Homeland Security don’t really know what they need. That’s just pure arrogance.

DACA will probably not survive court since is an unconstitutional E.O. so yes, democrats are stupid to not take the offer.

Trump's proposal is a MODERATE one.

Pelosi can plant her flag on her far Left stance, but in the process, she will insure that Trump will win in 2020.
