Almost kind of hauntingly prophetic of what would become the future. This interview was 30 years ago. Some of you might find it notable how he brought up Japan. The U.S. was running a trade deficit with Japan in the late 70s and 80s. Japan back then was like how China would later become in the late 90s. That "George Bush" he refers to is of course the older George H. W. Bush, who wasn't yet President at the time of the interview. (his son, George W. Bush, would also later become President)
Japan was an economic rival but a strong militsry ally China is a much bigger threat to the US in both ways
Interesting bit from the past. Funny thing is, he was a vile Democrat at the time. Now, of course, he's changed since his lobotomization and subsequent adherence to the Republican Party.
Another interesting thing back then, Opera had a lot of African Americans in the audience. Contrast that with today, 80% middle-aged to older middle-aged white females, peppered with just a few black women in the crowd.
Contrary to conservative belief no tv show that I've ever heard of has guards at their audience gates who select people based on sex or race, and I think this the kind of thing that would not escape notice. I don't think even Oprah has enough money to keep that from getting out.
Great interview... thank you for that. That is so ironic because Oprah would, in my opinion, be the best possible choice that the Democratic Party could put forward for 2020. Oprah would need an exceptional V.P. candidate though and I do have a suggestion: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1729521777377245
