Why open the government if he has to declare an emergency?

Sure but it won't be offered. Republicans refused to vote on a bill in 2013 and last year that involved that provision.

Right, but they hide their disdain for the border security behind “ THE WALL IS RACIST”.

I would say with good degree of certainty that Shea Builders who built my home has devices in place to make sure my house was built by legal employees :)

It's obvious you are oblivious to the speech and what Trump said.

How would he know who builds his house? But thanks to the low opinion of illegals by the left, we know who picked his lettuce and mowed his lawn, because time and again yiu guys say that’s all they’re good for. Not to pick nits, but the left’s attitude towards illegals is elitist and racist.

Democrats have made clear that they value people who haven’t crossed the border (illegally) more highly than people who are already in this country.

That may be the intention; to prepare the battlespace by making an offer that he knows will be turned down to make the Democrats seem unreasonable. Or...he just made a bad offer.

Since the Democrats turned down the DACA compromise, we should just start deporting the DACA recipients. That's one way to take care of the problem.

In the spirit of being lied to and fear of it happening again, a little contextual history, from: https://wjla.com/news/nation-world/2006-secure-fence-act-vs-trumps-border-wall

In addition to the cost and the politics, Democrats are also concerned that President Trump will ultimately back out of any deal that funds border security in exchange for Democratic priorities, like a legal status for Dreamers or comprehensive immigration reform.

That's what happened in 2006, Bier explained. "They don't want to be played yet again."

In exchange for the votes on border security and border infrastructure under the Secure Fence Act, President George W. Bush promised Democrats a shot at comprehensive immigration reform. In the years that followed, more than 650 of the 700 miles of fencing was built. Democrats also voted to double the number of Customs and Border Protection agents in a short time, but comprehensive immigration reform never happened.

Obama's 2006 Senate speech praising the Secure Fence Act, also warned that it was far short of a complete immigration solution. "It is great for sound bites and ad campaigns," then-Sen. Obama said. "But if we think that putting up a few more miles of fence is by any means the whole answer to our immigration problems, then I believe we are seriously kidding ourselves."

It took another seven years before comprehensive immigration reform came up again under the Obama administration in 2013 and after passing the Senate was rejected by the House of Representatives. Even limited immigration reforms have failed. One of the reasons Schumer backed out of the 2018 deal to fully fund the wall in exchange for legal status for Dreamers was because Trump "moved the goalposts." Once the two appeared to reach a deal, Trump added demands for ending chain migration and the Visa lottery system.

"At this point, everyone on the comprehensive immigration reform side of the conversation feels like, 'we've been had,'" Bier said. "They don't want to be played yet again and spend even more money when they're not getting any real fixes to the immigration system."

There have also been complaints that Trump is continually moving the goal posts and continually reimagining the plans for his "big, beautiful wall." The president has gone back and forth about his preferred barrier.

I disagree with the position of legal amnesty.

But I'm a social conservative. Trump really isn't.

I think Trump supports DACA. He has supported it all along.

I wish I had a dollar bill for every time I've written the descriptive phrase, "Idiot W. Bush". I'd have enough to buy us and two of our guests a lavish dinner with all the trimmings and drinks at the Broadmoor down in Colorado Springs.

But, back to today -- of course Donald Trump should be held to the same standard of compliance with a "deal" as all the Democrats. Surely, if he reneged, the liberal mainstream media would be screaming it from the rooftops for weeks on end. Unfortunately for all of us, what was more-or-less the same bunch of media libs 'looked the other way' when Democrats lied and refused to their part when President Reagan took his part of the definitive action needed to solve the illegal alien mess. So... here we are.

But your point, although well known, is well-taken. Everybody should be FORCED to comply with all aspects of whatever is eventually agreed-to -- whatever that ends up being. Right now, I'd say it looks probable that NOTHING is going to be done for quite a long time.

Meanwhile, even MORE 'caravans' are being organized in Central America and marching north....

If we go back to March 2018, we'll see that Trump was the one who turned down a deal that would have seen his wall being built in exchange for DACA. He turned it down then, much - I'm sure - to his chagrin. Now, he is offering the same deal they offered him at that time. Brilliant negotiating.

    https://edition.cnn.com/2018/02/17/politics/donald-trump-daca-blame-the-wall/index.html
Trump had every opportunity to both protect DACA recipients on the brink and deliver on his dearest campaign trail promise. Democratic lawmakers had been largely willing to exchange billions of dollars for border wall construction in exchange for some kind of legislation to save DACA and the "dreamers," a wider swath of the mostly young, DACA-eligible undocumented immigrants.

In the end, though, Trump couldn't bring himself to take yes for an answer.

Instead, he rejected the framework of a deal that would have, with the stroke of a pen, given him a major "win" to lord over Democrats ahead of the midterm elections and into the 2020 presidential cycle, while simultaneously turning down the temperature on an issue that, according to all available polling, breaks heavily in Democrats' favor.

Oh, and just because I can't resist, another gem from The Art of the Deal:
"The worst thing you can possibly do in a deal is seem desperate to make it. That makes the other guy smell blood, and then you're dead."
