Yes. I agree with you. It seems that every year that passes, we get some new ... well... what's the word I want? ... 'crazy', yes, that's it! Some new crazy idea, that then becomes normalized. I don't really have an explanation for it ... surely, the extraordinary period of prosperity and security for the privileged children of the middle/upper-middle class in the post-Communist period had something to do with it. Their toilets cleaned by immigrants, their wars fought by the children of their social inferiors. Then there was the turn to postmodernism by the humanities departments of the Academy -- a 'disappointed academic Left -- as one sensible liberal called them. But that doesn't really explain the insanity.

One query: pedophilia? I know during the late 80s, some of the Left toyed with this idea, mainly spurred by gay rights thinking. I believe the The Nation carried an article which more or less normalized sex tourism aimed at teenage boys in Morocco ... but then drew back from this. I can't see pedophilia being normalized for a long time yet. Look how they all cheered for Roman Polansky initially, then backed away from him. I recall an angry essay by the editor of The Nation excoriating the trendy Hollywood Left, and ending with "No wonder middle America despise them".

But maybe they'll eventually go that way. What was unthinkable thirty years ago becomes normal today and compulsory tomorrow.

Color me jaded, but did he report and show the death threats to the police so that they can pursue the people sending them, or do we just have his word that he received them? I read that article and about 10 others and none of them said that the police are involved.
