Trump supports torture and other indulgences

If there is any question that Trump is running the White House as an autocrat, look at his recent appointments. After firing Veterans Administration head, David Shulkin, the most recent one is a doctor with no managerial experience nominated to head the second-largest federal bureaucracy. He is Dr. Ronny Jackson, the lead White House physician since 2013 and a rear admiral. Apparently, Trump liked what he saw when Ronny reported on Trump's health at a press conference. The appointment is absurd.

He has selected a sycophant, Mike Pompeo, to be his new secretary of state. Pompeo is much like Pence, a lapdog who smiles and agrees with everything Trump says. There will be no divergent views at state. Whatever Trump says, goes.

Trump supports torture and waterboarding. "When ISIS is doing things that no one has ever heard of, since medieval times, would I feel strongly about waterboarding?" Trump said in an interview with ABC News. "As far as I'm concerned, we have to fight fire with fire." He added, "And if they [Pompeo and Mattis] do want to do (torture), I will work toward that end."

But do I feel it works? Absolutely, I feel it works.

Accordingly, Trump has nominated the darling of torture and waterboarding to be his next CIA director, replacing Pompeo. Her name is Gina Haspel, and she and Trump seem to be a perfect match.

Trump stole John Bolton from Fox News. Bolton will be Trump's new NSA. Diplomatically speaking, Bolton is a bull in a china closet, favoring a preemptive nuclear strike on North Korea, a bombing run (or two, or three) on Iran and regime change in North Korea and Iran. Just the man Trump wants. However, he might regret the appointment. Bolton is more controversial than Trump and he might steal the stage.

Trump picked another television star to join him in the White House, CNBC's controversial economist Larry Kudlow to serve as the next director of the National Economic Council.

It is pretty clear Trump is watching way too much television.

What is important, too, is who Trump is not hiring. Hope Hicks left the White House today for the last time. She resigned a month ago. Trump has not appointed anyone as communications director. Trump will be his own communications director. A true autocrat, he will say and do what he wants without any interference from anyone. That could prove extremely interesting because often Trump is his own worst enemy and he talks and tweets too much without thinking.

He may even decide to be his own chief of staff. Now that really would be interesting.

 

Why do you oppose torture?

 

What a question, a true Trump supporter. Because it is illegal. It violates our laws. It violates treaties we have signed. Because it is inhuman. Because it doesn't work -- the torturee will say anything to please the torturer.

But I wish to give credit where credit is due. This brave Trump fan actually engaged a Trump policy and a current topic of interest to everyone. The vast majority of Trump fans do not want to talk about issues related to Trump. For example, Trump's tariffs and the impending trade wars with China and Japan. They don't want to talk about Trump and Kim and the North Korean issue and how Trump is handling it. They wish to avoid the 45% turnover rate at the White House and Trump's controversial appointments.They would rather not talk about Trump running the White House like an autocrat and his fear of reporters and his failure to conduct a regular press conference, the kind Sarah holds every week.

Trump fans wish to avoid all those extremely important issues concerning us today. They want to talk about the 2016 election, Trump's accusations against his own DOJ and FBI, guns, more guns, the 2nd Amendment, and the scourge of liberals.

Why don't they want to talk about the real issues facing us today? Because they know Trump is screwing up and they don't want to talk about it.

But once again I wish to congratulate RiseAgainst to have the balls to speak up for his choice. It is rare, indeed. Most Trump supporters don't want to talk about Trump.

Is Trump an autocrat? Yes. The thing that's so annoying about this is he and his followers seem hidebound devoted to revisiting every decision we made 50 years ago. Trump's idea of high tech is coal mines with halogen lighting, diesel operated oil wells, vacuum tube production and corset marketing. Trump & Company aren't picking winner investments, They're picking stuff that was on the way out 20 years ago. Waterboarding? The whole damn world defines it as torture. In regards to "torture" I am against that as well.

But I do not see waterboarding as "torture". I only consider something torture (and this definition long predates President Trump) if it causes permanent physical injury to the person subjected to it.

Whether you "see" it or not is irrelevant. It is universally accepted as torture by experts. The US government prosecuted and executed captured Japanese who waterboarded and categorized them as war criminals. Torture is for barbarians and has no valid application other than to inflict extreme pain and/or discomfort. There is no reliable information that can be extracted via torture. That is confirmed by the findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation of CIA torture, among many other well researched studies. It is also prohibited by the Constitution and all international treaties the US government is a signatory to that describes war crimes, which are of course incorporated into the Constitution via the Supremacy Clause (Article VI Paragraph 2).
