Actually not. The American conservative credo is "I've got mine, now get a job, work hard, be an asset to your employer, be frugal, make good decisions, and you can have yours too.

There should be an extra check box on the 1040 forms:

[ ] Would you like to donate an extra $1000 to give to the poor?
If you checked the box, enter $1,000 in the blank. Add this to your tax. This is the amount you owe.

With all the compassionate liberals in the country, surely this would solve the problem each year?

You should check out hungry kids eating a free school breakfast. Starving? No. But something that shouldn't be happening in the "richest country on Earth," as you put it.

Well, if only liberals paid to feed the poor, via taxes, it would no longer be a part of the Commons. Would you want to do the same thing to the cons, and have that same deal with our war spending? If you want to spend on war, check the box and give 1000 buck in extra taxes to the military industrial complex.

    Yes and no.

    Mostly no.

I mean: why do we import Somalis and pay for housing them and pay for separate school buses for them and pay for separate school buses for Somali girls and pay for separate school buses for Somali boys?

Exactly, they shouldn't be mooching a 'free' breakfast that isn't free in the first place. Hold on a second while I pull out my violin. Taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for feeding fat little illegal kids.

Cut off all social safety nets and see what happens.

It was not that long ago what old people on social security were buying canned dog food. If you never had a job that allowed you to put back lots of money for old age, and you have to live on social security, you can get 70 bucks in food stamps or less here in my area. There is a gov't program that gives out commodities, a small box that will not feed anyone but for 3 or 4 days, and the demand for it exceeds the boxes.

So what happens when AI and robotics displace so much of the workforce? No jobs to be had for millions. Then what? Well, what will happen is the GOP will literally die, and the democratic party will be the party of bernie sanders. This is the future, and if the GOP is to remain relevant, they better lose this attitude you see here on this forum. You guys are not gonna like the future, when necessity destroys the GOP.

I have often thought that citizens would be more content if they had a direct say in how their taxes were spent. Perhaps a good system would be 50% of taxes collected are controlled by congress, and the other 50% is controlled by those that pay. This means that each individual taxpayer would get to direct 50% of what he/she pays.

Of course, the federal government needs a severe clipping, going back to its Constitutional directives.

Well, they sort of already have that a little bit with tax deductible charitable donations.

Nobody on food stamps would starve in the absence of food stamps. For the vast majority food stamps simply permit them to continue living a first world lifestyle - the money they would have spent on food they spend on iPads and second televisions.

True. The problem would be solved if the "compassionate" would donate more.

Only 13.2% of food stamp recipients are unemployed. The remainder CAN afford food as food is the first thing you pay for, perhaps only after water (which is trivially cheap), and even one shift a week at minimum wage is enough to feed you for the week. Eating on $1 per day is very achievable as an alternative to acute starvation.

Can even have your Quinoa lol https://www.grocerycouponguide.com/articles/eating-well-on-1-a-day/

Of the remainder, there are other programs which provide unemployment entitlements and the such. They get food stamps in addition to this.

Food is cheap, in large part due to Capitalism, you're welcome.

I don't believe that for a minute. I know of a family, years ago, that had two kids, the father worked, the mom got loans to go to college, and without those food stamps and medicaid those kids would have went hungry. And if there is one like this, that I know of personally you can bet your arse there are many more like them in this nation.

How many poor people do you personally know? Have you ever seen one?

Food is cheap? ha ha ha Where? Food goes up and up, and is not included in inflation numbers when they adjust social security up for cost of living. Nutritious food is not cheap at all. But you can buy a small hamburger at McDs for a buck. And get fat and unhealthy, real cheap.

The father worked, there you go - so he's earning a minimum of $290 a week, that's $28 for food (4x7x$1), leaving $262 for iPads and second televisions

My point is food should come FIRST out of your income. Maybe they would have had to downsize their rent, but they will NOT die of acute starvation. In this way food stamps are really a subsidy for other stuff like rent, iPads, second televisions, cigarettes, booze, etc.

Just because you waste your money doesn't mean you have to.

    https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=7062440&page=1

You would, of course, probably stretch that to $5 per day if possible, but that's not necessary. If you can't afford the $5 per day the $1 per day diet is achievable, but not all that palatable. You won't enjoy it. But you won't die of acute starvation, which if you recall, was my point all along.

Fast food is expensive as ****. Don't do that.

First world people are entitled as ****.

I dunno what the future holds.

I think that a Global Socialist Government is inevitable. Maybe there will be some post-apocalyptic dystopian future.

I would simply encourage those, who have a future, to take advantage of the current circumstances. Do all that you can to secure your self and your family, for the foreseeable future.

Uh, these people didn't have two tvs and the one that had was given to them, and they used an antennae to get the local stations.

So if you have to put a roof over their heads, rent would be what you pay first, not food, unless you want to raise your kids in a tent, if you could find a place to pitch it.

Rent is sky high, anywhere you live. The cheapest rent here for a place with enough space for two kids is 750 bucks. Used to be, rent or a house payment should never exceed 25 percent of your income. No working person in my area, earns 750 bucks a week, in take home pay. You are disconnected, IMO.
