Trump loves to thump his own chest to say that he banned travel from China, Europe, and other viral hotspots, due to the coronavirous.

His "ban" resulted in 40,000 people entering the US from China while the virus was still limited here, thus seeding it everywhere.

To have an idea of how porous his "bans" are, look at this interactive map. Click on the United States and read on the right side of the screen about the NUMEROUS exceptions, a long, long, long list, including, among other things, a huge number of visa categories that are exempt from the "ban" so numerous foreign nationals are admitted, not just US citizens and permanent residents and first degree relatives as some people here, in discussions, have assumed to be the case.

Then click on Argentina and see a simple, complete ban. Flights to Argentina are not allowed, period. Nobody is allowed to enter Argentina except citizens and residents, period, but if citizens and residents do enter (medical flights and repatriation flights are allowed) then the person must quarantine for 14 days.

    There. Simple. THAT's a ban.

Trump's travel "bans" are a joke. They are as full of holes as a Swiss cheese. Do observe that there is no federal mandate for quarantine like in Argentina; it's all left to the states which have a hodge-podge of regulations, from strict to none. A federal mandate would be possible, though, because the control of the borders falls under federal agencies.

    -----------

I know what the knee-jerk response to this OP will be: "Pelosi and Schumer criticized the ban as racist and Cuomo and DeBlasio told people to use the subway and mingle."

That's the But Pelosi or the But DeBlasio etc. defense. It doesn't work for me. I'm not a Democrat and I have no obligation to defend these Democratic politicians, and I do blame them too for their share of governmental mistakes. But two wrongs don't make a right, so Trump was still wrong in imposing such porous "bans."
