Ukraine's nominal president, Petro Poroshenko, is losing to a comedian with no political experience by a whopping 14%. There will be a run-off vote, so Poroshenko will probably perform better in the next round of voting, but still. That a comedian is the clear front-runner in Ukraine's presidential election shows that even western Ukrainians think their government is corrupt and dysfunctional.

The comedian presidential candidate has talked about negotiating with Russia in order to end the war with the separatists in Donbass in contradistinction to Poroshenko's militant revanchism. So already we see that the people of western Ukraine do not really support the war against the separatists in the east and desire diplomacy instead.

Still, this comedian, although positive in some respects, remains wedded to the pipe-dream of a "unified" Ukraine that is integrated into NATO and the EU. That simply isn't going to happen, ever. And not because the separatists in the east are "puppets" of Russia, as Zelenskiy likes to claim, but because the separatists in the east were egregiously wronged by their counterparts in the west. After such a betrayal, there can never be genuine unity between east and west. The only terms on which a lasting peace can rest is through political separation.

I read that Zelenskiy might be backed by Poroshenko's mafia enemy the mega criminal Kolomoisky who is wanted in Russia for using white phosphorus during the bombing of Slaviansk.. He is also under suspicion for the burning and hacking of hundreds of protesters in Odessa as well as for the airline shoot down.

Actually, Zelensky gets most of his support from the South. Poroshenko gets most of his support from the Western Ukraine.
Now I want to see how you are going to retwist your claims to fit your narrative.
On another note - Poroshenko and Turchynov will continue to be major political power. Ukraine just had a Trump moment when people pretty much vote against everyone in established politics.

In presidential elections last Sunday, a comedian who plays the president on a Ukrainian TV show called, Servant of the People, won 30% of the popular vote and could be elected president for real in a run off election against incumbent Poroshensko who in recent polls has only a 16% approval rating.

The comedian, Volodymyr Zelesnsky, plays a teacher who is elected president after railing against the corruption and ineptitude of the current government which is, in reality mired in economic stagnation and accusations of rampant corruption.

So yet another reality TV star may be elected president as a protest against corruption, cronyism and ineptitude of actual political leaders who serve only to promote their own interests and those of their doners and oligarchic elites.

    From Buzzfeed:

"While you may laugh at the idea of a comedian doing so well in the polls, let’s not forget that President Petro Poroshenko, the current leader of Ukraine, made his name as a businessperson in the chocolate business, a Slavic combination between a hardened magnate and Willy Wonka.

Poroshenko is running for reelection, but things haven’t exactly been the cakewalk you’d expect for an incumbent. Between the clash with Russia since it annexed Crimea and threw its backing behind two breakaway provinces in Ukraine’s east, a wobbly economic outlook, and a corruption scandal in the defense ministry, Poroshenko is only managing to grab roughly 16% approval in recent polls......
    .......
Even though Zelensky appears to have won the first round, there’s still the second to get through. “Those who say they are voting for Zelenskiy are not voting for him, but rather against the status quo,” Brian Mefford, a consultant based in Ukraine, wrote for the Atlantic Council. “His candidacy is a classic protest vote. The first round gives voters a chance to register their disapproval, but in a runoff when the vote really matters, voters may reevaluate their support for Zelenskiy.”

Whichever contender Zelensky faces in the runoff, the show being staged in Ukraine is sure to be an interesting one, with no clear indication who’s going to take the final bow."

Hmmmm....sound familiar? Interesting times we live in.

Well I think it says it all... politicians in Ukraine have lost all credibility. I tried to find some info on Volodymyr Zelesnsky's policies but clearly he's running on fumes and laughter. If he wins things will either get much worse or there may be some improvement between Russia and Ukraine.

Yeah, because the establishment in Kiev is so obviously corrupt. That would be the same establishment that the US helped put into power, and which people like you have been defending for years now. Remember? Apparently, "the Ukrainian people" don't actually want them and would rather elect a comedian with no political experience to their highest political office.

Not necessarily. Zelensky is for EU and NATO integration. Just because he speaks Russian doesn’t mean he will turn the country towards Russia.
The whole concept that a russian speaker is pro-russian is just silly - I bet you, English speaking Australian would not like it if fellow English speaking Americans came to your country and stole a chunk of it. I was born in Ukraine and primarily use Russian at home, yet I hate Russia, was there only a couple of times and have no real connection to it except for the language.
Ukrainians vote for him because he is something new. Poroshenko and Tymoshenko were involved in Ukrainian politics for at least 20 years now. They are nothing but repackaged old stuff.
This is a similar phenomenon like Trumps win in the US elections - people wanted someone knew, who has no real political experience. And it doesn’t seem to be so bad, not nearly on a level of what Democrats where predicting.

Ukrainians voted for him, simply because there is no anyone else to vote for. :skull::skull::skull: Zelensky is a protege of Ukrainian olygarch Igor Kolomoysky - the Poroshenko's rival and maybe even enemy.
Because Zelensky speaks Russian doesn’t mean he will turn the country towards Russia. Otherwise, all the those ones who voted for him - not necessarily they hate Russia, like some political Ukrainians who speak Russian, live in America and "love" Ukraine from far abroad.

Yeah, you must be worried about that. Even Skripal supported Crimea re-joined Russia.

Well ... the US elected once a Hollywood actor as President and many still say he was one of the best Presidents ever and also an Aircraft Carrier of the Nimitz Class is named after him. So ... sorry to say ... but, "who cares?"

Yep ... and that he sold illegal wepaons to Iran and used the money to back illegal Contras in Nicaragua ... we better tell not. Or does someone realyl believe, he did not know about it?

    P.S:
And that he nearly caused WW-3 due to arrogance and ignorance with NATO exercise Able Archer in 1983 on what he insisted ... we tell also better not!

Ukraine could elect a comedian as it's next president.

Sounds like a great idea. The former actor we had as a president was above average. The current president is as well but better thanks to his business background. Politics could benefit from some humor.

Ortega back in the day was a Soviet agent.....and supposedly had Soviet advisors on the ground....from what I've was told by a retired army intelligence friend. We needed to clean house.:))

"Able Archer"??....I was a teenager back then, but from what I was told, it was a great psy op.....completely baffled the Soviets. So much for their intelligence!

If you're in Germany....you should be happy the way all worked out.....Berlin wall crashed, germany reunited in Nato.
Dead russkis turning in the graves.....all those millions dead.....almost all for not....and the CCCP finished.:))

The two evils, Poroshenko and Kolomoisky - and they hate one another and the Ukrainian people by pitting them against one another. Poroshenko was not only killed his own people in Donetsk and Lugansk, but also the men he conscripted to fight them without training and without any means of protection. Today Ukraine has the lowest standard of living in all of Europe.

Kolomoisky, who is believed to be behind the comedian, not only bombed Slaviansk with White Phosphorous, but together with Avakov was behind the burning and hacking of up to 200 protesters in Odessa, including children. He is also suspected of being behind the shoot down of the airliner in Ukraine.

    Ahhh

    Ukrainian civility.

    Problem.
    Ukraine is not a Nation.
Ukraine is a region that was always ruled by someone.

Was Rurik the first ruler? I like to think so.
Certainly the Rus establishing Kiev as a direct
predecessor to Russia. Whether it be from Kiev,
    Novgorod, Moscow or Petrograd.

The borders of Ukraine were as ill conceived as those of most sub Sahara African nations. Borders without regard for the peoples to live within them.

Presidents like other leaders only know what they are told, and their advisers have their own views and agendas. If a president is not told something, then how would he know what's going on? What Pres. Reagan's mistake probably was, is that he put in the wrong advisors - but that has been the mistake of Bush and now Trump. As for Obama and Clinton, they were perfectly aware of what was going on and could care less.

The whole thing about the CIA and drug smuggling to support the Contras seems unbelievable when one considers that Mrs. Reagan started the war against drugs in the US. One has to wonder, does one hand know what the other one is doing in our government?

Skripal's daughter was involved with a Russian agent, and the MI6 knew it. I guess they feared she was there to collect information from her father, so the MI6 poisoned them and threw the blame on Russia. The Skripals are gone and missing, probably dead, and the Russian agent she was going with and his mother disappeared. Is my opinion logical? Yes! Is anything the British said logical? No!

I wonder what ever happened to her dog.
