Twitter Says Trump Minneapolis Post Broke Rules, Glorified Violence

The warning escalates a confrontation with Trump that began when Twitter put a fact-check notice on one of the President’s tweets for the first time on Wednesday. The short messaging service, after years of criticism that it let Trump use its site to spread misinformation, added a note to his tweets on mail-in voting with links reading “get the facts.”

In response, Trump signed an executive order that seeks to limit liability protections for social-media companies. Under current law, companies like Twitter and Facebook Inc. are protected for users’ posts. Trump told reporters that his order “calls for new regulations under section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to make it that social media companies that engage in censoring or any political conduct will not be able to keep their liability shield.

The president’s tweets about the ongoing situation in Minneapolis incited a strong response from other Twitter users, but those replies have since been hidden or removed by the company. The options to reply and like the tweet have also been disabled, while the retweet and quote-tweet functions have been left active.

It is not the first time Twitter has issued a warning against a politician’s tweet. In April, a message from Brazilian lawmaker Osmar Terra was flagged after he said quarantine measures risked increasing the spread of Covid-19. He included a chart to support his argument.

As was the case with Trump’s tweet, Terra’s message remained accessible because it was in “the public interest,” but its content was hidden from view by default.

The problem I see here is that trump didnt 'glorify' violence, he stated a cause/effect sequence of events that is SOP.

    it wasn't a glorification but a warning
so if the president says if you dont evacuate during a cat 5 hurricane you could die is glorifying hurricanes?

We don't shoot looters dead in the streets except during some extreme crisis. Theft and damaging property are not punishable by death,

    Trump was calling for violence.

Who's to say that these savages are limiting themselves to theft and property damage? And why to liberals think even that's legitimate?

So, now Trump has retweeted it on the Official White House account, and it hasn't been flagged.

This is getting ridiculous. This is the tweet Twitter is "hiding". I guess Twitter has decided to double down on their bias.

....These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!

At what level of criminal behaviour do you believe it becomes acceptable (or indeed legal) for the President to order the US military to summarily shoot suspects?

He could shoot someone in the middle of Times Square and his supporters wouldn’t care was day one — he could order the military to shoot hundreds in the middle of downtown and his supporters wouldn’t care was day 1224… totally not a cult.

    HERE'S YOUR WAKE UP CALL!

When violent, destructive mobs of chaotic looters are destroying property, running amok and threatening people, torching buildings and public offices, and, stealing everything in sight, then that is an "EXTREME CRISIS".... :omg:

Savages riot. If you think savages automatically equal blacks then that's your problem, not mine.

I don't think any level of rioting is acceptable in any circumstances and I would like everyone involved to face the correct legal consequences (though sadly many will likely get away with it). I don't think a President suggesting the military should be shooting citizens is acceptable in any circumstances either. There is absolutely no contradiction there so you're free to agree with me on both points.

He put the stock market over human lives with COVID, unsurprising he’d put the profit margin of a target over human life in Minnesota

Trump has a presser coming up at 2 PM.

    That should be Must-see TV.

They literally broke into a police station and set it on fire and police officers had to be rescued off of the roof by helicopter. At what point do you think the use of force is acceptable?

It kind of reminds me of Biden's "poor kids are just as bright as white kids" comment, in the way that these little slip ups reveal the speaker's biases and prejudices and true feelings.

Do you mean like when president Trump gives his approval to the statement that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat. Is that savage or just Trump being Trump?

I never said the police shouldn't use reasonable force against criminals (and reasonable could certainly be significant in such extreme circumstances. We're talking about the suggestion that the US military could be brought in to shoot people for looting though. That was still wrong.

I hope Trump does not give Minnesota a nickel of Federal aid to rebuild.

The coward of a governor is totally responsible for making the officers stand down for black Christmas.

Let the city remain just the way it is, or let the People from Minnesota pick up the tab for voting in that coward of a governor.

    Absolutely.

In the media however, only one side is given. The rioters and looters are referred to as 'protestors', as if violently stealing merchandise is a form of protest.

I just feel sorry for the innocent people caught up in the middle of this.

Here we're just rebounding from coronavirus, and now people are watching their businesses and jobs go up in flames, or destroyed by looting. It's not just the business owners either, because the people who worked at those places won't have jobs to return to either, at least not for a while as things are cleaned up and restored and rebuilt.

There are ways to protest. This isn't it.

This is opportunistic thugs. They're not helping their cause, they're making them look bad.
