A bunch of us got ahold of one of those in Vietnam and had a good time firing it. I don't believe I've ever enjoyed firing a weapon more. They're a blast.

BTW, your post about what happened with you when you had to defend yourself got caught up in other posts where the back and forth with "
Your immature need to get in the last word, vacuous though it may be, is noted." was going on. While at the end I directed it at you, it wasn't directed at your predicament. I believe your description of the event, and would never make fun of a situation where there was an exchange of gunfire. Only a fool would. That's why I asked you exactly what happened. I wanted to know if he fired at you.

I once had an opportunity to handle and fire a Colt Monitor; which was a shortened BAR made during Prohibition. You're right; it was a ridiculously fun gun to shoot.

    I appreciate that, Dave. Thanks.

How was the ammunition actually acquired? Was not the specific cartridge rendered obsolete and no longer fielded by the united states military at that point in the history of the country?

Actually IIRC the .30-06 was still used by the military in certain weapons even after the M14 supplanted the M1. Snipers used it, and the 1919 Browning machine gun was still used as a coaxial machine gun on certain vehicles.

I know it’s correct. There were stores of them in country, maps were M14s and other weapons that used the cartridge early on in the conflict.

Btw, when I was 13 or 14 in Belfast working in my uncles machine shop we got a hold of a WWII BAR, but we didn’t have much stock of 30.06. We had access to a lot of .303. So, I tried to rechamber it.... mucked it up royally. Learned a lot though, particularly in retrospect, being amazed I didn’t Darwin out of those years.

Give it up you will never get the last word when dealing with a hard core anti-gunner, they take it too personally.

    Why guns

    1) The US was founded on violent revolt with guns and so American culture is gun culture.

    2) Macho is part of it. Guns are glorified in Hollywood films. Don't they make you feel good/manly, grrrr.

    3) Depsite figures showing crime falling, people feel there's a safety need and that society is becoming more violent.

    4) "I like to shoot guns". Some do it as a hobby, they collect and sell.

    5) Brought up with guns, how to use them safely, go shooting with dad etc..
